I did my Anmeldung and the person gave me a piece of paper that had Meldebestätigung written on it. It seems to correctly show that I am living at my place of residence and what my full name is but I am not sure if this document is enough.

While watching YouTube ([Simple Germany](https://www.youtube.com/@simplegermany)), they talk about something called Meldebescheinigung. Is this a document I have to apply for separately? I live in Siegen and on the [city hall website](https://www.siegen.de/ols/dienstleistungen-a-bis-z/aufgabe/meldebescheinigung-einfach-erweitert-101/), they are saying I can get this document by applying for it online. Do I actually need this Meldebescheinigung or is the Meldebestätigung enough?

  1. Strictly speaking, a Melde*bestätigung* (“*confirmation* of residency registration”) is the document that confirms that you *have* just registered your address with the city authorities, whereas a Melde*bescheinigung* (more or less “*certificate* of residency registration”) is something you can get at any later date, to confirm that you *are* registered at a particular address.

If your employer, bank, insurance, … or a government authority specifically asks for a *Meldebescheinigung*, you may need to get that document. But first ask whether a *Meldebestätigung* is also sufficient! In everyday language, the two documents often get conflated.
