Hello there! I’m just curious your opinion about littering in your home country, Greece. Are you satisfied with the cleanliness of your cities in general? I found this 20 years old article on the topic: [https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2004/dec/05/internationalnews.internationalnews](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2004/dec/05/internationalnews.internationalnews) It states Athens can be the continents tidiest city. Do you think its still true? If not, what has changed? Thank you for your answers and your insights.

  1. Its in the Greek culture of not caring.

    (Not giving a fuck)

(Who are you to tell me what to do)

(Fuck you im gonna do whatever i want)

    Its really sad.

I was in Belgium a year ago. There was one trash bin every 1-2km and the streets were very clean.
The trash collection vehicle picks up trash on a timed schedule. (You need to take out your trash at a specific time)

In Athens we have a trash bin every 50 meters and some greeks don’t even bother using them.

  2. I recently moved to Greece and am thinking about starting a one-person litter clean up group. Just taking a trash bag and picker once a week or two weeks in my local area. I love living here and want to do something small to say thank you. This is something you see in my country of birth and it’s one of our good customs to import here.

  3. After having visited quite a few cities abroad I can say greek cities are some of the cleanest(when it comes to trash or stink). Athens is probably the dirtiest of them though. The dirtier parts are along highways and in the countryside where people often dump stuff in the forest. Even that has reduced significantly the last decade or two.

  4. Littering is far less than it was 20 years ago, with the exception of downtown Athens, which could be far better off. I remember it around the 2004 Olympics being spotless. 12+ years of economic crisis took their toll.
My only problem is that the municipality doesn’t collect larger items left near the dumpster often enough.
But in general it’s OK. It’s not like the problem that they have in e.g. Budapest.

P.S. What’s the point of your question? I see that you regularly post things pissing on Greece and the Greeks. Seems like shitposting to me.

  5. I once waited at the bus station with a colleague from university. The trash bin was like 1m away from him. He threw the can on the ground instead of the bin. I got furious at him and kinda forced him to do the right thing.

So, no. I gave up hope. People, abd unfortunately also young people, have an attitude of “I don’t give a fuck” and it’s sad. I find that Athens and Thessaloniki are probably of the filthiest cities in Europe.

  6. Greece, and at least Athens, has made strides in terms of cleanliness in recent years. The main issue always was littering mainly. Athens was no exception and had tons of trash strewn about, but I must say that nowadays it’s much better than it was up until a few years ago. In the countryside people still mostly don’t give a fuck, and the tourists are known for filling the places they go to with trash, but there’s many, mainly volunteer efforts, to keep beaches and forests clean and Athens as a city is mostly clean, depending on the area.

Compared to big cities in Europe I’d say Athens may have more trash strewn about but there’s less piss soaked grimy alleys. Also one thing I’ve generally noticed abroad is that there’s a lot less trash cans around whereas in Athens there’s trash cans everywhere, so throwing your trash is very easy and not inconvenient.
