I caught a bit of the story on the news yesterday, where the reporter casually mentioned that amazon don’t recognise unions in the UK.
I was like, what? What kind of shite laws do we have, where companies can just go, ‘naw, we don’t recognise you, so we don’t have to deal with you’
Fucking shameful
I used to know someone who worked in one of these centres. On your feet for basically the entire day, doing physical labour. Sometimes the boxes they had to shift were way heavier than they should be lifting by themselves. Any shouts for help were largely unheard because its very noisy. Every day they were risking their health and safety shifting stuff that could injure them. Boxes piled high on the floor and on the shelves. Toilet breaks are indeed timed and you have to be back at your post before time runs out or you risk getting into disciplinary procedures.
There are a lot of different people who worked there, so making friends was hard as nobody had any time to speak to each other. You clocked in, put in 110% effort to get all of your assigned duties done, maybe have a piss, maybe have a snack, then you wait to be searched (not getting paid for it) and then leave, exhausted.
Can’t be sure on the stories of people pissing in bottles and containers though. You think with a culture of Theory X Management that its entirely plausible for staff to resort to that to avoid the disciplinary process.
