  1. I wonder if his Dad works in the legal system per chance.

    >At an online hearing at Newcastle County Court on 2 November, his dad spoke for him in court, and Jack won what he had paid them plus court fees, totalling £999. The counterclaim was dismissed.

  2. Good on him, University accommodation business act so aggressively to get every penny they can. I remember my landlord in second year trying to charge me to remove a bbq and weight set that was still on the pictures of the advertisement we saw prior to moving in. Also £7000 for a room in Norfolk is insane let alone under construction.

  3. Good job. It’s about time these appalling people were brought to account. He could have a life long career in law just dealing with almost identical cases I’m sure. Hopefully lots of students in similar and worse positions will see this and will realise all is not lost.

  4. Good for him. I hope this is merely start of a long and successful career. Their are plenty of university landlords who are real crooks. Some friends of mine’s boiler burst during mid December and the landlord didn’t bother getting it fixed until January.

  5. Let’s just hope more students can do the same and stories like this either force a change or become the norm. Student numbers have skyrocketed and companies know a money-spinner when they see one. They expect students to just moan about it on social media but do nothing to actually improve their situation. Students need to start proving them wrong

  6. >Estateducation declined to comment when approached by the BBC.

Search them on Google and sort by the reviews. They certainly have something to say in responding to the negative ones.

  7. I love this! I work for a construction company who have produced student accommodation this year and it wasn’t finished for the moving in date, students had to moved in and it was still a building site. Good on him! I hope more students stand up for themselves

  8. The fact that his dad is a barrister suddenly makes it less impressive.

EDIT: however, I’m not dissing the lad. He prepared his case and won, rightly.

  9. I hope this becomes the start of a regulatory scandal that results in an entire industry of legal claims against landlords popping up: a bit like what PPI became.

  10. Smart money would be to set up a portal/service where you can kick off little cases like this against your landlord.

I’m not opposed to property ownership or renting, but some people have the piss taken out of them and it has to stop.

Students are particularly vulnerable, Glasgow was notorious for shitty landlords 20+ years ago. My mate rented a flat from Kohli (the guy in Still Game) and the boiler broke in December and he/his agents simply ignored them while it was single figure Celsius in their flat.
