The Economist has released their 2023 Decomocracy Index report. France and Spain are reclassified again as Full Democracies. (Link to the report in the comments).

  1. Given the clownshow of the UK, where two successive PMs have not been decided by the will of the people but are there solely because of the incompetence and corruption of their predecessors, I think I’d slow my roll on calling it “a full democracy.”

The Economist has to sell hometown papers, sure. But let’s not act like three PMs — two handpicked by insiders — since the last general election is how a “full democracy” is meant to operate.

  2. Mauritius should be invited in the EU. They are on the same archipelago as Réunion, which is a French overseas region already in the Union. Plus, as the map shows, it is a good enough democracy with good enough standards of living, like a metro for instance. They had a problem with a member over the Chagos islands (which most know through Diego Garcia) but that member is now out of the EU. Maybe in 20, 30 years an adhesion could be accepted. 👍🇪🇺

  3. In my eyes, there’s only one almost full-democracy in the world and that’s Switzerland

    The rest are somewhat democratic

  4. Democracy would mean people vote the decisions…but people vote for political parties which then couldn’t give a bigger f*ck about what folks actual need until next time voting

We vote democratic for a time limited dictatorship…

Look what lies they use before an election and how much of it is left hours after the counted votes…

  5. United States is “mixed” not “flawed” democracy:

    1) The 50 American states are each “full” democracy.

    2) The US federal government is “partial”, i.e., non-democracy (1/2 of 1/3 of branches is approximately democratic.)

Here, “democracy” means ‘classless per-capita representational republic with majority rule.

  6. Belgium a flawed democracy? tfuck, not on the level of the US, at least our elections are still fair.

We are so democratic that I have 10 governments

  7. What the hell is this truly based on? A lot of these dark blue countries don’t even have true constitutional freedom of speech.

How is the UK higher than the US when the House of Lords still has hereditary members and the UK doesn’t even have full freedom of speech? A guy in Scotland was arrested for teaching his pug to do a Nazi salute as a joke.

  8. No one lives in a True Democracy.
Literally all Governments in the World are Puppets of big companies and willing to harm their own people in order to appease them.

Everyone that believes that his country is truly Democratic and not pawned is just Stupid.

  9. I find find it terribly hard to believe that Botswana, South Africa or India are more democratic than Romania. Let’s say that Botswana and South Africa are debatable. But India? It’s not even close, let alone better.

  10. How is Hungary still classified as a democracy, albeit flawed, is beyond me. It is now a hybrid regime, an authoritarian rule with a democratic facade.

The EU needs to stop playing this stupid game and suspend their membership until Orbán steps down and this democratic backsliding is reversed.
