That’s a bizarrely low sentence even taking account the fact he was under 18 at the time of the offence. Sentencing guidelines on the rape indicate a starting point of 12 years, even reducing that by a third for the plea that’s still a way off 5 years. That’s all before we even get into the sentencing on the assault on the man.
It would make some sense if it were a life sentence with a minimum of 5 years, but several news sites are reporting it as a flat 5 years.
It hurts me to know people like this are alive and (soon) back on the streets among us. Surely there’s more value in immediately extracting his brain for studies, maybe we can learn something about what led to such an abhorrent string of behaviours.
I am usually not one for high sentences and I think the UK usually does get it right with 25 years for murder etc rather than the 50 given in the states.
