Hello, I am a Canadian artist that specializes in drawing detailed city maps. This is a map of Winterthur that I did recently.

  1. I have never been to Switzerland (I hope one day I can because it looks beautiful) but I thought that my map might be of interest in this subreddit because Winterthur doesn’t really have its own community here and some people in this community may have visited Winterthur. I hope I was able to do it justice, I would love to know your thoughts. Thank you for looking!

  2. Oh, now it is finished. Wow.

Interesting to see the medieval nucleaus of the old town, the division by the train tracks, and the planned extensions from the industrial era.

Nitpicking on a masterpiece: r/mildlyinfuriating are the shadows of the church towers which to not point in the same direction as the Sulzerhochhaus (near the footbal field) and the Roter Turm (near train track).

  3. Awesome!
How long did this take you?
And why did you choose Winterthur specifically, and not Zurich/Bern/Geneva?

  4. What is it like to visit a city you’ve never been to yet have familiarized with by drawing it? Also I really like your signature in the trees – reminds me of the story of how Swisstopo’s cartographers managed to hide their signatures in Switzerland’s official maps 🙂

  5. That is awesome! I used to live there for a while, but my flat didn’t make it to the map. But my old office did. It’s really neat to see the city this way.

  6. This is so cool. When I was a kid I used to like drawing roads haha, don’t ask. This reminds so much of back then.

  7. If you don’t mind me asking: what’s your process here? do you use something like Google Maps and then draw a layer upon it? or do you just freehand it?
