  1. the water companies don’t give a shit, cheaper to pay the fine.

government doesn’t give a shit either if you’ll excuse the pun.

Bonfire of red tape and all that.

  2. The water companies haven’t improved their infrastructure at anywhere near the same rate as new properties are built. This lead to wastewater networks regularly exceeding their capacity as soon as there’s any sustained rainfall. Realistically the customers bills should have increased significantly over the last decade or so in order to pay for long term improvements. Unfortunately any income increase would likely just line the pockets of owners and investors rather than being spent where it is desperately needed.

  3. Rachel Maskell MP (York inner, Labour) voted for, but Julian sturdy MP (York outer, conservative) and every single tory mp in the Yorkshire region – including Rishi Sunak – either abstained or voted against the amendment that would have compelled Yorkshire Water to take action on this.

  4. Is this really a surprise, private water companies putting profit over the environment & people’s health?

Another example of how privatisation is not the solution to everything.
