Tories on verge of breaking key pledge to recruit 20,000 police officers by March

  1. They were never going to reach it.

This country needs to decide what it wants. Does it want more police officers responding to calls, going to burglaries and on foot patrol or does it want a well vetted, professional force?

The two are at complete odds with the pithy budgets all forces have been running on since 2010.

The Police are failing in many sectors but it’s not for lack of trying.

  2. You’re overworked, underpaid, deal with unpleasant situations daily, and half the internet has decided it’s fair game to call you a ‘rapist’. Would you join?

  3. Never forget this is the same government that fired 28,000 police staff when it came into power over a decade ago.

  4. Who wants to be a police officer when your paid shite treated like shite and a rapist by association apparently

  5. I guess their advertising campaign in the sex offender wings of prisons hasn’t panned put as well as they hoped.

  6. I think this is probably a good thing given the problems the Met has with rapists, murderers, paedo, and other criminal throughout their ranks. I’d prefer to take time so new police can be thoroughly vetted.

  7. No, no, no, we never said that we were going to recruit 20,000 new officers. We’ve met our pledge, just like the hospitals. You’re just not defining it the same way that we do. In fact, we’ve concluded that over 20,000 officers have received some form of training. That training effectively makes them ‘new’

  8. is this the pledge that meant by 2023 we would have the same number of police we had 15 years ago…..

I recall essex road police were cut by 70%….. oddly enough, my trip through essex is constantly delayed on the m11 because of crashes caused by insanely dumb driving

  9. When you have an electorate that only car about soundbites more than actual delivery this is what you get.

Tories could promise to make you a millionaire and the current crop of voters would elect them for several decades with the expectation that it will be delivered to them soon

  10. Well as someone who has seen the actual job postings I’m not suprised.. often they have a critical catch like “you have to have lived in this one part of town for 5 years or don’t apply” what the hell is the point of that.

  11. Tories on verge of breaking every pledge they ever made. Whoops! Sorry they already broken most of them…

  12. You will see police forces cutting police staff positions soon. Limits on budget increases and inflation, plus having to absorb these uplift in officer numbers means they have to cut back elsewhere.

Which is stupid as you do need staff behind officers work. So forces will have more officers (about what they had 10-12 years ago) but they won’t be as effective as they should be.
