This story is huge, still not getting much press, should be the end of Sunak. Tories have zero credibility left. The jig is up.
So these civil servants who made this decision, who sets the policies that they follow when making a ruling? Who’s responsible for the department in which they work.
Before I read the transcript, it sounds like the answer will probably be ‘because everyone deserves protection from libel, under the law’. I shall report back later, once I have read it.
I would imagine the answer is “because we follow the rule of law as set by government, even when the law is demonstrably stupid, as libel law has been so many times”
It is pretty appaling how many things the Wagner group was able to do and mostly get away with(in the public eye atleast) until russia invaded ukraine. Before the invasion they were very active in the donbas. They have also committed atrocities in Syria, Sudan, Mozambique, Lybia, Mali and probably a lot more. The US sanctioned them in late 2016, the EU and followed FOUR years later in 2020.
Does the UK/EU have similar groups, doing similar things around the world and didn’t want the russian whataboutism to hit to hard? Or is it just the good ol’ we don’t have hard evidence so we do business with them and look the other way
