I’m a Yorkshireman who used to live in Scotland. Whenever the independence debate would pop up, i’d end up with Scots going on at me (because i’m English). They’d always bring up the point that Westminister screws them over. I’d point out Northern England had it worse than the Scots and not a single one believed me. I’ll be sending a few friends a link to this 🤣
What the 2016 referendum should have asked:
Who do you trust more to have your best interest at heart:
O The Tories
O The EU
Heartbreaking. Ironically, many of these people voted Brexit in the hope that things couldn’t get any worse.
Guys. It’s been like this since the 80s. The buildings resemble the countryside in North Korea for many towns across the North these days.
Once again people acting like everywhere and everyone in the South is rich and we get loads of funding. Towns like Hastings, Margate, Clacton, Jaywick etc are deprived areas of the country but don’t receive as much funding as they should to help deal with issues, I believe Jaywick is one of the most deprived areas of Europe.
It’s genuinely quite sad how ill informed so many people are when it comes to politics and thinking “those norverners only voted Tories for brexit” and that’s why the country’s a mess.
Grow up you knobends. Have a drive around the north east and look at the shit state most of it is in, most of which is because of empty labour council promises. That didn’t happen overnight. Do you know how LOCAL councils work?
Fear not for Boris Gove and so on are going to LEVEL IT UP!
Just like a video game
I pretty much only ever see businesses closing around me, I don’t see much in the way of new businesses or investment. I think many people would say the same.
For me we always hear from Andy Burnham, but the north isn’t just Manchester; and Manchester is by far really miles ahead of most places in the north in terms of investment and modernisation I imagine.
Newcastle gets heralded as a a huge city and jewel in the north but really the city centre itself is tiny compared to Manchester/Liverpool.
Sunderland is finally getting some much needed investment in terms of the city centre and riverside, Durham has been too on their riverside (the town centre is still a dump).
Of course the north is massively behind the south and has been for decades, and does need support but it comes from the central government. At least Sunak has been looking at things like the Treasury opening a place further north it’s a start.
I’d like the North to have other voices other than Andy Burnham though, he can’t speak for the entirety of the north. Be nice to get interviews with other figures for their concerns, demands, plans, feedback.. etc
I’m from this region and yeah it’s bad and it’s shit, the north gets a bad reputation but the people really are decent folks.
We’re not alone either. The north west, though a bit better off because of its beautiful scenery and tourism is in the same situation.
As is the south west and parts of the Midlands. I know it’s not Londoners fault because they probably get fucked over by the government too but everything in this country seems to be centered around the south east.
I completely agree with most of that report. The inequality between North/South is a major problem the country needs to solve.
This is such a weird way of looking at it though. If you take the most deprived area of a country and compare it to entire other countries then yeah, it’s going to be more deprived than OECD countries.
It would be more interesting to compare the North of England to the “North” of the other OECD countries.
For example how does North England compare to (I’m guessing) East Germany?
So how’s that Tory ‘Levelling up’ going then eh? Seriously anyone who voted Brexit or believes the Tories that lives in a deprived area needs their head checked out.
It doesn’t really make sense to compare ‘north England’ to the economies of entire countries. Like us they will be heavily skewed by their big cities.
How does ‘north England’ compare with the poorly invested parts of other countries. That’s the more comparable thing surely?
(I’m from the north and absolutely we need more investment, not arguing against that)
I was about to comment “In before all the comments are blaming Northerners for the state of the country because they supported leave” as a joke.
As a **joke**. Then I looked at the comments and realised my satire was unnecessary…
Hmm that’s the entire North of England I guess which is extremely rural in the main. Manchester is absolutely booming. Granted there are plenty of places up north that have massive brain drain and no prospects though.
I think the more damning part of the article is this:
The UK is a lowly 35 in the list followed by Costa Rica (36), Luxembourg (37) and the imagined country of the north of England (38). Greece, still recovering from a sovereign debt crisis and its aftermath, is bottom.
As a northerner we are underfunded but this is a case of the UK as whole performing poorly in this metric. May have been useful if they placed where other regions in the UK would have fit on the ranking.
This is so sad. The north is amazing and the people are lovely. I wish they could have a better economy and more investments directed to the region. Sadly it’s forgotten like many countries do with some parts of em.
The north of England is 38th. The UK is 35th.
This is just divisiveness to make the north and south fight. Everyone everywhere has been denied investment in the UK. The Tories have become entirely about extraction of wealth.
It’s worse looking at the UK wide investment stats, because the north of england doesn’t generate much wealth to invest. The UK as a whole generates massive amounts of wealth, and none of it is really ever invested back. We sold off most of our corporations, the massive ones like Amazon dont even pay.
Its not because they voted leave, or because the south gets everything. We are all being fucked by the same people.
People often say – oh you haven’t travelled if you think it’s bad in the UK. But the parts of the north are more grim and hopeless as anywhere I’ve ever been. I’ve not been to say Mali or Bihar, some of eastern europe looks much the same as the council estates I’ve known.

its all whitewashing, a bunch of nonserious people slinging slogans around in the hope of a 2 point boost in the polls
