It’s not just that it’s very inappropriate. It’s that it so obviously is controversial that even doing it would almost certainly spark outrage. Not realising that is extremely stupid too.
Edit: idk why I’m getting downvoted. From an optics and business perspective this is also stupid is my point.
Lol wokey
Would be fc de kampioenen anno 1990?
Ffs, get a life! Everything nowadays is offensive.
It’s you
Make sure to file a hurt feelings report and get it cancelled asap. No room for comedy or any nuance left, gotta love Belgians chasing the American model
I don’t know this play, and I don’t know how they play it, and whether there are adaptations to the script. Maybe we should know this before judging/cancelling it?
For all we know it might even be satire?
Edit: I saw in comments below that this was not satire, and it is supposed to be funny by playing black “barbaric” people.
Because of that I definitely see a problem with this.
Most likely performed by right wing extremist that are planning a mass colonisation of Africa.
These people should limit themselves to playing Belgian characters – even Il barbiere di Siviglia should not be allowed if they don’t have Spanish roots. Actually lets cancel Il barbiere di Siviglia completely because its Italians mocking Spanish.
You lost me at “Toneel”, entertainment waarde tegen het vriespunt.
Edit: Amai, zoveel toneelliefhebbers hier… er zijn weinig dingen die mijn levensvreugde zo snel doen verdampen dan toneel, ieder zijn ding zeker.
It looks like an original way to apologize to Congo for the colonial episode.
Honestly, if anything can be called blackface, this is it. This is not a far fetched resemblance of it, this is what all the blackface fuss was about. And I am not woke, i am all for good comedy and am not against zwarte piet but this is stupid and even if it is comedy, it can’t be funny.
Just saw a fragment on YouTube and it’s indeed that white people in black face play the ‘barbaric Africa’. Without a doubt they go full colonialism and it’s very worrisome.
Also the fact that many here don’t see the problem with this and think it’s just ‘woke gezaag’ shows that Belgium still has a long way to go
Cry me a river
Its you. Get over it
It is because we’re importing this vision from the US, but here’s the thing though. Why?
I don’t know the content on that play but I’m assuming we’re calling this out because ‘blackface’. I understand it’s the trend nowadays, but objectively, why?
If they are a theater group made up of folks that happen to be white and they want to do a play with some stuff happening in Africa, why does it have to be a problem? Now of course for that purpose they dress up, that’s theater, that’s what actors do. If it’s just for a role in a play, with no intention of attacking anyone, can’t we just take it for what it is?
The will to condemn with no distinction of intention or context , the whole ‘cultural appropriation’ madness… If we’re beginning to say that white people should simply refrain from touching anything related to Africa to avoid that sort of trouble, I’m not sure we’re moving towards a less racist society.
What we need is the opposite, a world where that kinda shit just does not matter.
It is you. Being offended doesn’t mean you’re right
You are correct but it’s not really surprising. When the pieten still come with curly hair, big red lips, golden ear-rings and so on and people swear up and down that there’s ain’t no racism involved.
Yes, it is inappropriate. No, they probably don’t intend for it to be as offensive as it is.
Damn, seeing the comments on this,… I’m leaving this sub
Okay, who in their right mind thought that in 2022 it’s still a good idea to do plays about colonialism and blackface without it either being satire (akin to Tropic Thunder) or it being commentary on these things?
Because from what I’m reading from this it’s indeed neither and these fools don’t see they’re stuck back in 1970.
Heck, Hergé knew what he drew in his early days was offensive and he died in 1983.
– every flemish amateurtoneel ever….. they all thrive on those cliché’s…. if it’s not about this, it’s about dumb blondes, sex inuendo, outdated stuff.. most of these plays’ audience is 70+ so they’ll die out soon on there own, don’t worry…
It’s you, sorry
(small joke – almost weekend)
Inappropriate yes, but not because of blackface per say. Would it have been less problematic if actual black people played a racist stereotype? The play could use a good rewrite to reflect our current values, and our cultural past.

Why don’t they mock Jewish people?
