There were other songs that could have been an anthem. Rota, for examle: https://youtu.be/o_VL6ZYv2bE. But it was decided against it because of some lyrics, afaik. I think it’s beautiful, but too slow.
Fun fact, there is “**Hey, Slavs**” patriotic song, which melody is based on Mazured Dąbrowskiego, and it was used of anthem of few other countries, which lead to funny situations when during sport matches both teams had very similar anthems.
