The Flemish Parliament has approved the plan of the Flemish government, which divides Flanders into 15 regions. According to Flemish Minister of the Interior Bart Somers (Open VLD), this way a clean house can be made in “the opaque mush of supra-local partnerships”. There are now 15 regional partnerships. All Limburg regions form one region.
“Over the years, the Flemish administrative landscape has become clogged up by a tangle of intermunicipal collaborations,” says Somers. “Today we are achieving an internal state reform that will put an end to this and permanently strengthen local governments.”
“People have been talking about this since the conclusion of the Egmont Pact in the 1970s”
Flemish Minister of the Interior Bart Somers (Open VLD)
According to Somers, the choice is now clear: fewer structures, fewer mandates, more transparency, efficiency and local strength. “People have been talking about this since the conclusion of the Egmont Pact in the 1970s.”
Almost a year ago, the Flemish government already reached an agreement on the new division. When the new decree enters into force this spring, new partnerships will have to focus on the regions. Structures that already exist today will have until December 31, 2030 at the latest to adapt. Intermunicipal waste companies have until 31 December 2036 to adapt.
“It is an immense efficiency exercise that allows local authorities to work together better and gives more clout,” says Somers. He emphasizes that the mayors remain the pivot. “They maintain an overview and have monthly contact with their fellow mayors in the mayors’ consultations. In addition, municipal decision-making powers of course remain at the local level.”
“The operation of the region comes to the city council at least twice a year,” says Somers. Local governments are encouraged to cooperate in terms of staff mobility within a region, allowing staff to be deployed more flexibly.
This will be “Rivierenland”! “This will be “Waasland”, and this “Kempen”, and “Westhoek”!
And.. euh.. Oostende, Brugge and Gent.
Oh and Halle Vilvoorde.
*edit: seems like Oostende turned into Middenkust now.
Is this a new layer between municipalities and provinces or does it replace one of the two?
What a missed opportunity. I only see Mid-West on the map. Imagine if we had also gotten a Far-West and Wild-West.
Is it some kind of insult that Limburg is a single region?
interessante opdeling, maar wat een schabouwelijke namen..
* *brugge + middenkust = hadden makkelijk 1 regio kunnen zijn*
* *midwest + zuidwest-vlaanderen = hadden makkelijk 1 regio kunnen zijn*
* *denderregio + vlaamse ardennen = hadden makkelijk 1 regio kunnen zijn*
* *limburg had toch wel in 2 (of 3) regios kunnen verdeeld worden..*
How tf do I learn that from this sub
Midwest lmao
Limburg stands strong.
If this actually reduces intercommunale overload is something we’ll see later on.
Westhoek besthoek
So apparently its purpose is to clean up the mess of intermunicipal structures. Not a bad idea per se to be fair, we should probably do the same in Wallonia if you ask me. (Although it’d definitely need a different name than “région”, I get that “regio” and “gewest” are different words but they obviously translate the same in both English and French).
They should’ve created 5. The same amount of flemish provinces we already have.
But I guess that would’ve been to easy and cost efficient
So.. is this supposed to replace the intercommunales?
Who came up with these galaxy brain names? Oost-Brabant? Where is the rest then? Middenkust as well. And as cherry on the cake we now have a Midwest.
Wait is this legit? An actual thing that will happen?
Aha! More positions for politically appointed governing peeps. From 5 provinces to 15 regions. Time to reward some people 🤪
Cultural erasure of the provinces, really.
I’m not convinced. My town is at the edge of a long narrow thing. I can’t even name half the others because there is zero interaction with those towns.
I think that our town has already asked exceptions on this because we actually have things like garbage collection set up with neighbours that are now not even in the same region.
Ah ik woon in noord-oost zuid West-Vlaanderen
RemindMe! 2 years
De Gauw Oost-Brabant stands strong.
RIVIERENLAND GANG
What the fuck does this even mean. Theres a bunch of words and none of them explain what this is, what it will replace or why we even need it.
I’ve used Westhoek more than West-Flanders to say where I’m from. Doesn’t change much for me I guess
Westeros was right there.
When in doubt, burn the Riverlands.
I hope this won’t make the road works more cumbersome. I have heard that we have so many due to miscommunication between the federal government, region and municipalies.
Explain please what the point of this is.
> “We have created more subdivisions to deal with the current mess of too many subdivisions”
Why not abolish intercommunales completely and strengthen the provinces?
Why can’t we just have our provinces? Is there a specific reason for?
From De Morgen:
>The existing structures will have until 31 december 2030 to adjust. Intermunicipal waste companies will have until 31 december 2036.
Excuse me? Why the fuck do they need 13 years?
I don’t get what these regions are for? The mayors still exist en the provinces to. So this is just an extra layer in between?
Just another cashmachine or jackpit for politicians and other useless administrators.
I hope this is a joke.
“let’s make this easier by creating more regions, with more politically appointed posts and more paperwork.” – Bart Somers (who had to do an inquiry into himself for malpractice in a failed merger of cities)
If you can organize this per province level as is clearly case since that’s the plan for Limburg, why in the flying fuck would you not do it everywhere?
Gouw Oost-Brabant in ieder geval
Glenn j – Keizer vd wegwijzer “Aha nieuwe business”
Isn’t that the point of Flanders in general. Why the subdivisions.
Anyway, good to see they’re putting effort in creating another layer unaffected by elections which will provide election losers with a cashgrab consultancy job.
This is a step in the direction af abolishing the provinces as the nva strives to do.
1 step closer to Kempen independence, all part of the masterplan.
ah good. the country was not complex enough. im sure the benefits of this new organisation will be invaluable for the citizens
Ok dus nu hebben we
1. Noord Brabant. De meest noordelijke en oosterlijke Brabant (in Nederland)
2. Oost Brabant
3. ~~West Brabant~~.
4. Waals Brabant.
