Brexit would be the most unpopular thing in the country right now if the COVID pandemic never happened. Hopefully the self harm caused by Brexit will be fully exposed before the next election.
There are issues with the Common Agricultural Policy and how the Basic Payment Scheme is awarded, however that is something we could have changed from within the EU if it was that much of a concern. The likes of Lord Rothermere (Daily Mail owner) were never going to allow the government to do that though. It didn’t even have to be a disaster with Brexit, the problem is that DEFRA never came up with any idea on how to replace EU funding and still don’t know what they are doing. Inflation affecting raw materials and supermarkets continuing to gouge farmers is just making it all much worse.
Farmers voted for this. They’ve been a huge drain on our economy, the state and any attempt to make progress as a society for decades. The sooner they all learn the lesson bankruptcy might just teach them, the better for everyone.
Lots of smugness in here but I’d suggest the leopard-face brigade actually read the article and consider that the problem he’s talking about here basically boils down to a lack of Eastern European migrants willing to pick crops for fuck all wages.
So, in order to be smug about the fact that Brexit has been bad for agriculture, you necessarily must concede that Eastern European migrants were compressing wages in the UK all along.
Ultimately, either the UK has to import cheap labour and pay them a pittance, import the food from places where the people are paid a pittance for it, or accept paying a lot more for food grown locally and picked by local people and/or robots. Fair enough if you prefer the former, but if that’s the case at least be up front about being okay about exploiting poor people from poor countries to get your cheap food.
