In 48 hours: A dozen burglaries took place on Luxembourgish territory this weekend

  1. Is it just me or is crime rate picking up really fast in Luxembourg? Going from one of the safest countries to having a dozen of burglaries in a single weekend, plus the even worse things that have happened in recent years (Vapiano Kirchberg, woman found in Mont Saint Martin, and the horrible attack that happened at Auchan Kirchberg yesterday night) I don’t know, I am currently studying abroad but it hurts me to see our country turning this way, but maybe I’m exaggerating

  2. The result of the rich getting richer most likely. As more and more people face Inequality and struggle they reach for desperate measures. Mental issues are also on the rise as a result. Not sure what our government can do short term…

  3. I remember the worst story crime story we heard in the first week after we moved here, many years ago, was about a purse snatching. There was another article that week complaining about dog owners not properly picking up dog poop. It was years before we read about serious crimes in the news. The news stories written these days seem to highlight more crime, not necessarily because the crime is getting worse. It’s likely due to the news outlets having more contributers. It’s just my humble opinion…

  4. This is the result of too much tolerance towards drug gangs and homeless all around the city. It has to stop

  5. Burglaries have, as anywhere else in the EU, always been a problem during winter months. I don’t have the feeling that there are more and still think Luxembourg is a relatively safe place to live.

  6. Crime rates started to rise since the nigerian mafia first showed up.

Nowadays we have several of those groups – while the nigerian mafia is still the largest – and we can’t do much about it.

Those people know how our rule of law works, which means, simply because we know that they do shit, we can’t simply raid their house. We need evidences.

And they know it, they play their game.

  7. The authorities need to start making security and quality of life a top priority.

I find all the “it’s not that bad” or “it’s worse in Paris, Brussels, etc” not very helpful (comparing apples to oranges), but also quite dangerous because they favor the status quo.

Whatever the stats say, anybody who is not blind can see that things are getting a little bit worse everyday (whether it’s general cleanliness, the number of homeless people in the city center or Kirchberg, general acts of incivility, or indeed crime). The issue is that these types of problems tend to worsen slowly before they get out of control. There are many examples of places where quality of life has deteriorated very quickly in recent years (e.g., Sweden, San Francisco)

I think Luxembourg needs to embrace its uniqueness and play to its strengths. Invest and do whatever is necessary to make it very clean, very safe, very livable. Try to be more like Zurich and Singapore instead of using Brussels or Paris as reference points.

  8. There was an article sometime back on RTL or luxtimes that shared the results of a survey among police force (searching for link). To my surprise, it showed that the police force felt demotivated and were not happy with their job – WTF !!!!!!!!! the law enforcement can’t be demotivated and not like their job – nobody asked you to join the police – if you are in the force just to do a job and earn money – YOU END UP DELIVERING A DOZEN BURGLARIES IN THE CITY ! WHAT A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT LUXEMBOURG POLICE !!!! KUDOS !!!

  9. There’s also a lot of burglaries that don’t get reported by the news outlets. There were tons in Limpertsberg over the summer that were not in the news.

  10. What do you expect in a country where the burglars know they face fewer (in most cases none at all) consequences than the homeowner trying to defend his property.
