Yeah i kind of changed my mind about moving to malta someday…
I would strongly disagree that this is normal! Although it happens frequently in Malta this is occurs because of lack of airflow (this is a design problem and you cannot be blamed for this). Cleaning the problem is not fixing the problem.
Understanding the problem – The property has excessive humidity which promotes mold growth (this is a very common thing in Malta). If you close your space (ie. shut the windows) you are increasing humidity whenever breath, cook or dry your laundry inside.
Luckily there are a few solutions 🙂
Option 1: Get a dehumidifier (ask your landlord to get you one). You will however need to empty this frequently (think once a day), as it won’t be useful unless it is running.
Option 2: If you have heat pumps (aka air conditioning), you can switch them on using the dehumidifier mode and this will regulate the humidity similar to a dehumidifier.
The above methods will consumer electricity but you need to regulate the humidity to stop the mold from having ideal conditions to grow.
Option 3: Leave the window open but this might not be ideal particularly in winter.
There are probably cracks on the other side of that wall where water is seeping jn and causing mold. All the other walls are fine.
Its not normal and your landlord is a lazy piece of shit. If your contract is registered with the housing authority, report them.
Also, those stairs are horrendous. They’re a tripping hazard.Apart from anti-mold products and possibly a new paint job, you’re going to need an almost 24/7 dehumidifier in there to fix and prevent that.
It’s not only the mold, these Stairs look like they were just chopped into pieces.
So food and lodging. What a deal.
1800 yes but those high ceilings and big windows and stairs indicate you r renting a big house
Marble on the floor. Bargain!
You probably need ventilation there, try keeping the window like 2 cm open if possible.
You can always grow some mushrooms and resell them for a profit..
Daily reminder that landlords are parasites and grifters worse than any guy who would steal your wallet or car
Is that a ‘feature wall’?
Shame the place once you move out
I nearly puked when I saw this massive amount of mold. Report the landlord immediately – this is unacceptable. Mold brings on serious health problems. I can’t add to the other recommendations (and yes, I saw the suggestion to report the landlord.) I hope you don’t have children. (My guess is no, between the mold, f’ed up stairs, and the slippery marble stairs.) They would suffer the most from living here with the mold. Good luck!
Not gonna lie, from the thumbnail I thought this was at Mdina Dungeons or similar
I know it sucks but look into getting a dehumidifier it should help
We had a similar problem at a rental property. The landlords tried to fix it (painted from inside and outside with anti-mould) but the problem resurfaced the next winter.
We asked them to terminate the contract early but they refused and would keep the deposit. So we got a document from a doctor explaining that we are exposed to a health hazard and one day later we were out with our deposit.
Jokes apart. This is extremely dangerous to health. You will get a massive allergic reaction and hacking cough from that mound.
It’s not even funny. It’s criminal. You should name and shame this greedy idiot.
They need to fix the outside of the house to stop water from coming in. There is nothing normal except for bad maintenance. Passing shit as normal is a common thing in Malta, just tell them where to put it.
The place is not fit for human habitation. Yes these problem do happen, you fix them and if you don’t, then don’t rent it out.
That stuff will make you sick.
If they won’t fix it you should move asap.
Don’t complain … when you accept horrid places to rent and live in, what do you expect? For 1,800eur monthly you’d find other places which are actually fine. And believe me, once you move out, 10 others will be waiting to move in instead of you, and that is why the situation will never improve 🙂
Welcome to Malta
Get a respirator if you haven’t already, cleaning that shit.
I leave my windows open all year long. Summer, winter, day and night. However it’s not an optimal solution specially if you have kids or are very cold sensitive.
ps we own the property and invested in the best paints etc that we could as its our home.
How on earth is that place worth nearly 2k.
I had the same in my house, which I own, it was cracks on the outside. Mould grew exponentially!
Once sealed from the outside, the problem goes away but you can wash it was with a mixture of vinegar/water or bleach/water and then allow air in for a number of hours a day. Ventilation is super important to eliminate mould growth as they cannot grow in dry conditions. However, if this is were you have to live you have another two options, report to the housing authority and environment health or leave and find somewhere else to live.
Nobody should ever have to live with this! I was sick for years by living in a place with toxic mold. It was not visible at first, it was painted over, before I moved in… I had al kinds of “funny” sicknesses when and after I lived there…
It took more then a year to get better… So… Toxic mold and humidity are some of the first things I check, before moving in, now and in the future!!!
I beg to differ, I lived in Singapore for several years where it’s way more humid, hot and rainy than in Malta and I never saw humidity patches and fungus forming on walls. It’s about building standards and the fact that in Malta walls aren’t insulated and the concept of centralized heating/cooling is still a pipe dream.
Mould does not appear out of nowhere, it takes AT LEAST a couple of months until it starts showing like that. My guess is that the landlord knew about it but was too lazy to do anything about it. Painting over it does not solve the problem. And that is FAARRR from normal, dont let him fool you, and with that much mould I would start looking for another place as your health is in danger
u/CivilJohnny I have a 3 bedroom apartment is Swieqi available with no mold , modern and overlooking a park. 1450p/m – No pets please
Dm me for more pics and info – Im the owner, thanks
I got better for 1/3 of it and in Sliema 🤣
Who in his godamn right mind would pay €1800 euros in rent ? Fuck all the pigs that demand this type of rent . Do NOT rent these units !
Suggestions
* Stop using that spray there, you are not killing the mould and you are just spreading it around. The same goes with using bleach, use a proper product
* Use HG mould spray
* Clean it with gloves and mask on
* Leave the window open or get your land lord to make ventilation to the outer because there is no ventilation there
* use fan to ventilate air to that window
Yeah cleaning the inside isn’t gonna do shit. Get the landlord to actually reseal and treat the inside.
Or… Move the fuck out but I won’t promise you that it’ll be better anywhere else tbh.

Finest maltese appartment
Not going to side with the landlord, but we had the same problem in a new property after we moved in – and after we scrubbed with cif etc, what we found really effective was this [Ariasana Aero 360 Humidity Absorber 450G](https://www.homemate.com.mt/houseware/air-fresheners/ariasana-aero-360-humidity-absorber-450g/Item?c=29605) – we have 4 in the open plan / hallway and results where visible after a week.
