“Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the invitation of Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky to Paris was inappropriate.
“I believe our strenght is community and unity…but there are times when favouring internal public opinion risks being to the detriment of the cause, and this seems to me to be one of those cases” she said in Brussels.
Zelensky arrived in Brussels to hold talks with EU leaders for more weapons to fight Russia’s invasion and also for a quick start to possible EU membership talks.
Italy’s Foreign Minister said the Italian PM Meloni would meet Zelenskyon the sidelines of the EU leaders meeting.
> “I believe that the best way to create conditions for peace and dialogue is to keep the two sides on an equal footing,” she said.
She’s right, how careless of us.
Let’s invite president Putin to the Hague.
I really wish that all the fuckin right wing nutters (think European version of Trumpists) would move to Russia.
Why is it any of her concern? Can’t her neighbours invite into their home whomever they see fit without her approval? After reading the article, I am just as ignorant as was before.
The lack of bullshit coming from her on the international stage already irritated me. Thank god we are back to normal.

She wanted him to come to Rome?
Italian PM is also a straight out nazi.
Tell me you like Putin without telling me you like Putin…
Meloni super Cringe
Piss off, literal damn fascist.
Russia doesn’t want peace, and there cannot ever be equal footing between the attacker and the attacked.
Less abstractly, if Russia is allowed to conquest any small bit of Ukranian territory, then any peace will only be a temporary break before the next invasion, where they try to take the next bit.
I have read Italians who try to say that the Italian prime minister is pro Russia because the parties of Berlusconi and Salvini are part of the government coalition.
Although I am not a voter of any of the 3 governing parties, I break a spear in favor of Meloni, she and her entire party have always been in support of Ukraine, right from the start, in fact, despite being the only opposition party when Draghi was in government, they always supported the government on the Ukraine issue, going against the will of their electorate.
The Italians who say that Meloni is not invited because she is pro Russia are lying, she is simply angry because Germany and France are no longer considering Italy, as already happened with the trip to the USA.
I don’t understand her problem. Can someone explain? It seems like she thinks they invited him only for their own personal political gain. However I don’t understand how that hurts “the cause”.
I dunno, putting my personal love for Italy aside from what I understand they also were very supportive, even tho everyone said Meloni wasn’t going to be. So if she was left out on purpose it seems like a dick move.
I like the fact that when she won the election and said she supports Ukraine, a lot of people “forgot” she is extreme right.
Now suddenly they remember that.
E come sempre si prendono dichiarazioni a metà per fare il titolone, non che dopo dice che è più opportuna la visita odierna al parlamento europeo perché la compattezza europea è più importante.
I didn’t quite get it. Why does she think it’s inappropriate? Because Zelensky has a celebrity like status?
Before comment listen all the interview to meloni.
She is just pissed that he didn’t meet with her but GB, France and Germany
I do feel like people here didn’t really understand what she meant to say.
People here don’t seem to comprehend, Meloni (and other European leaders) seem annoyed by the behavior of France and Germany which recently seem to put national interests above EU ones.
In particular France and Germany instead of responding to the trade “war” against the United States caused by the IRA in a European way have simply sent their delegations to Washington probably to deal with their personal sovereign interests and not the European ones.
They should have sent the EU commissioners for Trade and Economy overseas not their ministers.
And Macron and Scholz have invited Zelensky to them before the European council without informing the other European leaders.
Let’s say that discontent is growing in some European countries against the Franco-German axis which no longer seems to favor the interests of the European Union.
Not to mention that the “Quirinale treaty” has recently entered into force which provides for frequent consultations between the Italian and French governments, and not even a week later France does something unilateral without having consulted Italy.
This is not being pro-Putin, it is about the fact that the “Quirinale treaty” appears to be worthless.
I don’t think this is beneficial to the EU cause Italy (and other countries like Poland or others) not feeling included will start looking for external support, they will certainly look for it in the UK and the USA, which are the closest allies outside the EU.
This title is misleading. She said that inviting Zelenskiy to Paris to meet only the french president and the germsn chancellor is dividing in respect of the rest of Ue. And she is right
Jealous.
In the words of the late, great Jessica Walter as Malory Archer “Che tipo davvero! Cazzo Fascista!”.
Ok, here we go. Mask is slipping.
Edit: actually, I think this article is framing her (somewhat ambiguous) statements in a disingenuous way. I acknowledge I may have rushed to judgment.
Is this the fascist that Reddit was saying is not so bad because she made a couple pro-EU statements?
Well she is actually right. Macron (and most French leaders, except maybe Hollande) have been dicksucking the so-called Franco-German axis for years, forgetting other countries like Italy or Spain. They often seem to forget that Germany is also a competitor to France and what’s good for Germany doesn’t mean it’s good for France (like getting rid of nuclear for example). You can’t build an united Europe with only two countries. There was no point in meeting Zelensky alone if he was going to go to Brussels anyway.
This is just disinformation. Clickbait title.
Edit: Op here is on a crusade against the Italian prime minister. Half of his post are propaganda. Fucking hell mate, get a life.
OP has admitted as being half-italian and spends all his/her time posting autophobic fake news about Italy on this sub; sad and disgusting at the same time
Meloni said the invitation was inappropriate because the previous time Zelensky met with Scholz, Macron and Draghi; Macron invited Zelensky and only Scholz this time, therefore blatantly excluding Italy, that’s why Meloni said this

Meloni criticizes Macron: “Inappropriate invitation to Zelensky, undermines European unity.” The retort: “With Berlin we have a special role”
by Cesare Zapperi
It is a real diplomatic clash on the eve of the European Council, not the first between Italy and France since the center-right government was born. For Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the invitation of the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, to Paris on Wednesday afternoon (when he met with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz) was “inappropriate.” The Italian premier was speaking before attending the work of the European Council in Brussels. “Our strength is unity,” Meloni said, criticizing French President Emmanuel Macron for the invitation, which she said would undermine European unity. There are times when domestic political issues “risk being at the expense of the common cause” of Europe. Zelensky previously visited Britain where he was received by Prime Minister Sunak and King Charles III.
French President Emmanuel Macron said he had “no comment to make” on Giorgia Meloni’s statements. “I wanted to receive President Zelensky with Chancellor Scholz, I think we were in our role. Germany and France, as you know, have had a special role for eight years on this issue because we also led this process together,” Macron said on arriving at the European Council. For the French president, the most important thing is to be “effective” and that there is a useful strategy to “find a lasting peace” that “respects “Ukraine in its rights” and “its borders.”
“The answer will come in the coming weeks.” This is how Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini responded on the sidelines of an Fs event to those who asked him how he interpreted Italy’s exclusion last night from the meeting between Macron and Zelenski criticized by PM Meloni as “inappropriate.”
Relations between Italy and France are not the most serene in recent months. The strongest clash was on the migrant issue last November when Paris agreed to accept, not without criticism of our country, the NGO Sos Mediterranée ship Ocean Vicking with 234 people on board that Italy had turned away. Palazzo Chigi had then rejected the French accusations, calling for “no lessons” and speaking of a “disproportionate reaction.” There was then the intervention of President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, with a telephone exchange with the French president, to restore greater serenity in relations between the two states. But the frictions remained, so much so that the Italian premier’s announced trip continues to be postponed. A clear sign that relations are not without differences.
In Brussels, Meloni strongly emphasized her criticism of the French president’s choice of Zelensky’s invitation: “I understand domestic political issues, the fact of privileging domestic public opinions, but there are times when privileging one’s domestic public opinion risks going to the detriment of the cause, and this seems to me to have been one of those cases.” And then the premier reiterated support for the Ukrainian cause: “Italy continues to be fully committed” to supporting Ukraine with a “360-degree contribution. In addition to the issue of respect for international law, respect for the sovereignty of the nation, the Ukrainian conflict directly involves us. the best way to build an option for peace and dialogue is to keep the forces on the ground in balance: 360-degree support for Ukraine is the best way to reach a possible negotiation. Italy will continue to support Ukraine today and intends to be a protagonist in the future possible reconstruction.”
On support for the economy, “I expect that the legitimate aspirations of individual nations will not come at the expense of others and that therefore a balance can be found. On the one hand we have a huge need to defend the competitiveness of our system but not because the United States has done the Inflation Reduction Act but because it is a time when you have to question the choices you have made for example on supply chains, go back to controlling your own fundamental chains. We have a competitiveness problem, we need to help the production system and do it in a way that does not create inequality within the single market and so for example we continue to believe that envisioning a sovereign wealth fund and working on full flexibility of existing funds should be issues to be discussed and put on the plate at a time when some who have superior fiscal space are calling for loosening
This article mixes up different statements about different things said at different times. The result is a mess.
She was saying that the invitation was inappropriate because it harms European unity and therefore hinders a common European course of action. Which is a common criticism that most European leaders have said one time or another (but also most leaders have ignored). She was not criticizing support to Zelensky.

You can hate Meloni for what she is, but her stance towards Ukraine is absolutely commendable.
OP, are you on a crusade against this PM? It sounds like you are arguing with everyone who disagrees. Her point seems valid in the eyes of Italian citizens if I understand correctly. You keep ignoring the article and just posting your opinion on other matters regarding her.
