  1. friendly reminder – the Home Office, under a Conservative government is the problem

Suella Braverman dismissed/rejected the recommendations of the UK Government Asylum Inquiry, that took 2 years

The Home Affairs Committee blamed the Home Office for the crisis

The home secretary rejected all its suggestions :

    >Suella Braverman has refused to accept the findings of a report by cross-party MPs that found internal failings rather than a rise in migrants crossing the Channel are to blame for the breakdown of the asylum system.

    >The Home Affairs Committee said the government had to day rejected all the recommendations it made in a damning report published in July following a two-year inquiry into the small boats crisis.

    >The report concluded that the government’s response to the crisis has been “characterised first by inattention and then by poor decision-making” and dismissed the previous home secretary Priti Patel’s claim that the asylum system is collapsing because of “the various strains, abuses, sheer numbers coming to this country”.

    >Instead, MPs found that increasing pressures on the system were a result of the “poor resourcing, by successive governments, of staff and technology in the Asylum Operations function in the Home Office”.

    >The committee said demand had not substantially increased, pointing out that there were 48,450 asylum applications in 2021, “a number broadly similar to those in each year from 2014, apart from a fall during the pandemic, and far less than in the early 2000s”

they found that antiquated Home Office IT systems, high staff turnover + too few staff were to blame for the growing backlog

the committee said that the creation of a safe and legal routes for potential asylum seekers could provide “a disincentive and deterrent” for crossing the Channel, where 150 people died over the past 5 yrs

PritiPatel gave no detailed proof that her Rwanda Plan would deter any Refugees

Home Office refused to give the committee more detailed costings for the Rwanda Plan

despite claims by the Refugee Council that the Conservatives Rwanda Plan would cost up to £1.4bn annually to relocate thousands of migrants to Rwanda

  2. Suella: A boat’s a boat, but a mystery box could be anything. It could even be a boat.

Jess: Then let’s get the boa…

Suella: We’ll take the mystery box.

  3. Hating rapists is kind of a given for a civilised person and she probably believes there is a good enough system in place to tackle the issue, despite few rapists ever actually facing a proper criminal trial these days. She wants to carve her legacy by tackling immigration, like May and Patel before her, because she thinks they are a scourge on society that has been ignored for too long.

  4. Phillips trying to line herself up for Home Sec after next election.

I’m sure she already has the knee high black boots.

  5. I like jess Phillips. She seems smart and says stuff that seems common sense. I sometimes feel like she hides her fierce intelligence behind the “aw shucks” attitude.

  6. Bit rich from Jess Phillips after she effectively enabled this pack of ghouls into power, since she, after all, did help to sabotage her own party in two consecutive elections!
