Reddit once again at arms against Switzerland without understanding what laws are

  1. Man, the sheer amount of bullshit people pull out of their asses in that comment section is astonishing.

  2. I’m starting to think that a large swath of Reddit just resents and detests what successful and stable countries like Switzerland choose to do.

  3. The current law has nothing to do with the status of neutrality. The Confoederatio Helvetica has been neutral since its foundation, but until a few years ago it supplied weapons and ammunition to all sides.

A particularly well-known example is the Oerlikon guns, a newer version of which is being discussed again today (Gepard). After the delivery of the British forces’ order was no longer possible following the encirclement of Switzerland in 1940, the blueprints were smuggled to England.

[Edit] I do understand the motives for which the arms export law was changed not so long ago. Unfortunately, they did not think it through to the end.

  4. r/worldnews is pretty easy to understand…

**Headline: Switzerland doesn’t want to give arms to Ukraine**

*Those gold loving mountain nazis, just do this for the money!$$”!!*

(Ah and mix in some Futurama quotes)

  5. “It’s a law that dates back centuries” does not shield you from criticism.

For example, the 2nd Amendment in the USA also forms a core part of their national identity and dates back hundreds of years. It is still controversial both domestically and abroad. Same for many of the anti-LGBT laws you find in the middle east.

I’ve noticed it quite a lot that Swiss people (and even more extremely this subreddit) have a knee-jerk reaction to whenever they’re criticised from abroad, usually along the lines of “it’s our tradition, it dates back centuries” along with “don’t interfere with our traditions and affairs” (usually China’s line lol). News flash: just cause it’s old doesn’t mean it’s good.

In this specific case I genuinely see both sides. I’m just criticising this attitude of defensiveness whenever someone points out that Switzerland has flaws like any other country.

  6. Instead of labelling the rest of the world “retards”…why don’t you realize you have a public image problem?
Switzerland is often seen as a country benefitting from the struggles of its neighbors…latest example was COVID: while you were partying and skiing in 2020 Germans Frenchs and Italians were shut at home.
If they would have been so “business friendly” during COVID as you, your infections numbers would have been much higher.
I remember a comment on a German newspaper about your open ski resorts…”the Swiss…they only care about money”. Can’t say they are completely wrong.

  7. Suck it up losers!!! Switzerland 🇨🇭 is the best country in the 🤬 world 🌍 like it or not 😎🤣
    Ticino forever!!!

  8. Most people in switzerland know fuck all about our own history, I don‘t know why anybody expects a bunch of foreigners who take their news from reddit to know better.

  9. Could you explain? I don’t have that understanding as a person living in Poland but I would like to understand it better.
