The post office scandal (it has its own Wikipedia page for anyone interested) is the most shocking example of callous incompetence and injustice I have ever read about. It makes me angry to even think about this happening to so many hard working and honest people.
Would like to see those who pursued the criminal convictions see some repercussions. This case will never fail to disgust me
Any prosecution that used evidence from Horizon should be overturned.
So when will we see the executives who decided to side with Fujitsu unwaveringly be held to account? They surely can’t remain faceless forever?
It’s horrible what they put them through.
It was not a good system. The post office need to be held accountable.
This has gone on for years now, and still no end to it. Terrible for the people falsely accused.
Absolutely shameful. Fujitsu must have known there was a problem, even if they didn’t know exactly what it was. But they let people go to jail and have their lives ruined, rather than fess up.
The zealous pursuit of postmasters by the Post office is shameful. The Post offices aggressive defence of litigation left the postmasters with only 2 million out of a 58 million payout. This was during Paula Vennells tenure as CEO who was also a priest for the church of England. Then given a CBE when she retired from that job. It really beggars belief.
The post office was rotten to the core.
I must add to the other comments that this is a particularly sickening case. Those people were respected members of their communities who happened to run a business that benefitted those communities in tangible and intangible ways.
The way they were hunted down and forced into submission was an abomination on our country. Even real criminals are allowed a process to determine whether they are guilty. The sub postmasters were deemed guilty from the start and those who pursued them did it in bad faith.
People died. There needs to be some real lessons learned and I’m not sure Post Office leaders responsible should be allowed to maintain similar senior positions again.
Private Eye have covered this gross injustice for a number of years.
It was almost always the same: the Post Office’s computer system (Horizon) fucks up, presenting the illusion of embezzlement, false accounting, etc., and the higher-ups consider Horizon to be like God and unquestionable in its judgement.
So many people have had their livelihoods ruined because of Horizon and their paymasters’ refusal to accept that their system was far from infaliable.
