I would expect EU to fund language courses, make them easily available and free but no.

I also dream that cyprus, I have begun Greek lessons a week ago, hope to advance enough to chat with compatriots and read their poetry in a year.

not from cyprus but I agree with this statement 100%, we should all learn at least a conversational level of each other’s language not only to communicate but also to understand and respect cultures

A few people like learning new languages, but most will learn another language only if there is a significant advantage in doing so.
We all speak English, regardless of how much we like England, because English is the “lingua franca” of our era. However our schools also tech French, for political reasons, but hardly anybody learns anything beyond the basics because we don’t really need French. Even if they made Turkish compulsory in our schools very few people would actually learn much more than merhaba.
I am a G/c married with a T/c we have 2 kids who speaks Turkish, Greek and English. Turkish is an easy language the issue is that T/c people just as G/c use a dialect and that makes it hard to learn proper Turkish.
Ότι να ναι δαμεσα πραγματικά
One of my fears is that eventually knowing each other’s languages will be necessary and I’ll be fucked 💀
To be fair, many of us do have either grandparents who are able to speak Greek or even some, whose their first language/mother tongue was Greek.
It’ll be great if we all be able to understand each others’ languages, but it’s hard to learn a language fully, if you’re not surrounded by it or really exposed to it in some way.
