Fawlty Towers: John Cleese to reboot series with daughter | TV comedy

  1. Rebooting the show which is always pointed to as the perfect example of a show that stopped when it should have and doesn’t have a bad episode. He’s all about destroying his legacy in the past few years isn’t he?

  2. Bad idea. Reboots very very rarely work.

This one was also a product of its time- let it rest as a piece of tv history

  3. It’s astonishing to me how swiftly this man went from being a national treasure to simply being known as cringe grandpa. Like, for all the work he did, that’s his legacy now.

  4. Hm. I’m not thrilled by this tbh. I’m a huge fan of the original, but I think it belongs in the 1970s. There are only 12 episodes, but they’re perfect, don’t risk ruining it. Sadly Prunella Scales has advanced dementia, so they will have to write out Sybill. It also just doesn’t ring true that Basil and Sybill had a daughter, does it? I mean, she used to grimace when he kissed her.

  5. Let me guess. It’s going to be about the insanity of “political correctness gone mad”.

Old man moaning about minorities is not what we need.

  6. I can’t see this working. Way too much has changed. Cleese is now a dinosaur from a by gone era. He is now the very type of person a younger him used to mock.

  7. Is there anything that isnt getting a sequel or reboot these days? Its like my past all over again, but even more shit.

  8. Feel like this guy is incapable of being funny nowadays. Just stick to your GB News Cleese and try not to tamper with the brilliant parts of your legacy

  9. It will last one season and will be savaged by reviewers for being boring and tarnishing the legacy of the original. Cleese just does not have the wit, nor the pull, to write a great show again. He should retire and live off his legacy before he ruins it.

  10. I thought he was cancelled. I swear I heard John Cleese say multiple times that John Cleese has been cancelled.

  11. If it’s suitably updated for the 21st century I reckon it might be all right. Manuel would have to be Polish rather than Spanish. Bookings would have to be online etc.

There’s still comedy in running a hotel. Gordon Ramsey managed to make a few series out of Hotel Hell.

  12. Oh god no.

Why don’t producers understand that reboots are what you do to broken things – i.e programmes that were shit? Not beloved classics.

  13. Porridge – pointless reboot

Open All Hours – dire sequel

Red Dwarf – unwatchable american version

Reggie Perrin – pointless reboot, unwatchable american version and dire sequel

Now, prepare for the final boss: Fawlty Towers

  14. I have a tremendous amount of respect for John Cleese but I can’t see how this won’t be anything other than car crash TV. No thanks.

  15. I don’t think an alt right basil attacking his immigrant employees will hit quite the same way somehow. I’ll never know because I’m not going to support anything he makes ever again.

  16. Part of me wants to see how it turns out….but part of me thinks it should be left in the past where it shines to go back to.

  17. It’s gonna be shit and Cleese will blame it on “PC gone mad/wokeness”, claiming they had to change all the jokes as not to offend anyone.

  18. I prefer John Cleese to the people pissed off with John Cleese. He’s brought me more laughs if nothing else.

  19. It’s going to be terrible. It’s going to be 30 mins of Cleese losing his shit about something he considers “woke”, like being a decent human being and not being xenophobic.

  20. I’m going to remain optimistic about this one. It might be good, it might be shit. The original series will always be the GOAT though, and nothing can take away from that.

  21. This is going to be just literally an old man ranting at clouds. And despite what he says he won’t understand the difference between mocking a character and being that character.

  22. Will mean the US will try even more adaptations of the show too. They were all so dire…Snavely, Amanda’s, Payne…

  23. How long into the first episode until the word ‘woke’ is uttered to rapturous canned laughter?

He must have divorce bills to pay or something.
