Any big project in this country (or more like Flanders because RVVB is a Flemish entity) is extremely hard to build. This is a cancer which is preventing some very important projects and is diminishing our welfare

If you want to build something big and ambitious in Belgium prepare to be pummeled into the ground by litigation, procedures and objections.
And then ”why are people not investing in Belgium anymore 🥲”
Yesterday in ”het Verhaal van Vlaanderen” when Tom Waes said that the Habsburgers liked making lists and excessive bureaucracy I thought ”oh looks like something stuck at least”
Yes, yes… It’s the procedures! Better get rid fo those pesky procedures.
Nimby’ism and procedural processions of Echternach are pretty much the case in every democracy with rule of law.
I’d much rather have this than a government that can just bulldoze away your home with a snap of the fingers.
Wij van [wc-eend](https://vantornhaut.be/projecten/) vinden dat wc-eend teveel regels moet volgen! Waarom mogen wij niet gewoon een appartementblok van >100 meter hoog op deze 3 are grond in de dorpsrand zetten in een straat zonder riolering, electriteitskabels voorzien voor 10 woningen en amper parkeermogelijkheden?
It’s hard to balance on one end the basic rights of people living somewhere + insane impulsive projects from developers and on the other end the fact that our economy get’s fucked because we can’t get anything done
Ik wil iets doen of krijgen en het lukt niet -> teveel administratie!, betutteling!, de overheid moet ontvet worden!, het zijn altijd dezelfden die ze pakken!, politiestaat!
Iemand anders doet of krijgt iets -> straffeloosheid!, de overheid moet ingrijpen!, verspilling van belastinggeld!, strengere controles!, profiteurs!, harde aanpak!
Nimbys willen doorgaans toch wel zelf hun achtertuin vol tuinhuisjes, garages en zwembaden zetten.
Is there to much bureaucracy in Belgium? Yes.
Is the fact that the court decided building a 40 000 visitor stadium in the middle of residential area is not okay, a proof of to much bureaucracy? Quite the opposite….
I can attest to this on a much smaller scale. I have a house in a city center shopping street. There is a RUP that dictates that the commercial space in my house MUST be a small shop (detailhandel). I wanted to convert this to my office space. This is taking months and will probably be declined.
Our village has one of the highest commercial vacancies in the country. Half the houses in our street are either boarded up, on sale, or have immigrants living illegally in the commercial parts. And yet I want to fill in a commercial space, with commercial activity, in a dying city center, and will not be allowed because “this paper signed decades ago says so”.
On the opposite end, the RUP is being changed so a big promoter can build an additional road to the back a row of houses (ontsluitingsweg) he can tear down and put apartments on. Straight through a park area, none the less.

I’m not sure what’s going on this thread, but first people were denying that the author is a project developer. When shown his business website (Vanthornhaut.be), they claimed it was another “Van Tornhaut”. When pointed out that his full name is on the about page of that site, they claimed it must be another “Lorenzo Van Tornhaut”.
I mean come on, are people this dense and incapable of a simple Google search or is someone here purposefully trying to mislead and obfuscate?
België is volgebouwd is een zinnetje dat de meeste mensen blijven herhalen…
behalve projectontwikelaars zoals de schrijver hier. Die willen regels bypasseren of negeren om mastadonten van projecten te ontwikkelen. Maar als dat niet lukt, is het omdat de mensen te makkelijk protest kunnen aantekenen, de regels te complex zijn en de bureaucratie te belastend is.
Het elitair gedrag van de schrijver, jeezes. *zucht*
Ja, België is onnodig complex. Het overlappen van bouwregels in de verschillende regio’s kan inderdaad verwarring en ongeloofelijk veel tijd en effort vereisen. NIMBY mensen kunnen enorm irritant zijn bij (bvb) het uitrollen van windmolens in België.
Maar bij het merendeel van de bouwprojecten is dit geen probleem. De RvVb is dan ook de laaste stap als alle andere vorme van protest of overleg niet helpen. Daar komen alleen de probleemgevallen. En als je met een loep op deze categorie focust en alle andere bouwprojecten negeert, lijkt het inderdaad alsof je niets meer kan doen in België.
