Trans prisoners in Scotland to be placed according to birth sex

  1. This change comes following outcry after they planned to put a trans rapist in a Female jail. Interesting to see how Sturgeon will manage her Transwomen are women position while also separating them in jails.

  2. I wonder where they would put cis lesbian rapist. To the prison with men too, so she couldn’t hurt women? Oh wait, in UK cis woman can’t be legally a rapist.

  3. It seems Sturgeon’s gamble with the gender recognition bill didn’t quite go to plan. Brought more attention to prison issues and polls are showing a drop in support rather than the increase hoped for from the UK government blocking it.

  4. I don’t think this is the right move either, after full transition especially m to f it seems wrong

  5. For me it should be:

Bottom surgery + 1 year of hormone therapy: Women’s prison

Otherwise: A special wing at their sex assigned at birth prison that only houses at risk LGBTQ prisoners (trans women, feminine gay men, etc.)

  6. you absoutely should not put her in the mens prison until she gives up and says she’s faking, because if shes not faking putting her in the mens prison is a serious danger.

i agree that rapist shouldn’t be kept with their victims and she shouldn’t be put in the womens prison either, but the reason this conversation exists is because trans women in mens prisons is incredible dangerous to them.

  7. I personally don’t agree with this decision. I’ve had the opportunity to temporarily work in prisons and if those prisoners are assigned to their birth sex cells they are way more likely to get raped. I’ve got to know of some cases where this has happened.
The safety of the inmates should be the number 1 priority.

  8. I understand the issues raised in this particular case, but surely it makes no sense to place ALL trans prisoners according to sex assigned at birth. This is one individual case, most prisoners, cis or trans, are not in prison for violent offences, and are not actually a threat to other inmates. It’s also very telling how people would somehow be okay with Cis-men being put in a men’s prison, even if they were charged with raping other men, Cis-women being put in women’s prison, even if they were charged with raping other women etc. Do people think that just because two people are of the same sex, one can’t force themselves on the other?

There should be enough safety precautions in place to ensure no inmate, especially one that is there for a violent offence, can hurt another inmate, regardless of gender, and the fact that people have reacted so strongly to this makes me think they either believe a) only men rape women, hence there’s no rape between inmates in women’s prison or b) rape between inmates happens in women’s prisons, but this would be worse somehow…
