Irish Roads Question! Whenever I need to turn into my driveway, I need to block the faster lane, cars usually ride my ass as I slow down and they blast their horns and flash as I stop due to oncoming traffic, I always indicate early. Who would be in the wrong? Masterful Painting included.

  1. I suppose you could make the argument that you should enter your property via the lane on the far right, proceeding past and doubling back. How much longer would this be likely to make your journey?

  2. I believe the truly correct way would be to go up past it and come back on the same side of the road. Is there a roundabout further up?

  3. The council signed this arrangement off. I should be amazed but aren’t.

Assuming that the MS Paint illustration is accurate I’d get on to your local council roads office with photographs to query this and ask to speak with the appropriate official

  4. There’s plenty of people who had the right away in the cemetery now.

I wouldn’t be chancing that turn on a daily basis if I had to stop in the overtaking lane. All it takes is one distracted driver behind you to not notice the indicator and your life could be changed forever, or ended right there and then.

I’d get onto the council about extending that painted island to give you somewhere relatively safe to sit while waiting to turn.

  5. Technically I don’t believe you can make that turn from the left side of the road.

On an empty road, sure thing. But if there was a car behind you it would be bad form to hit the breaks to try make that turn, drive up the road & come back down the other side.

  6. Two thoughts.
    1. There was probably a consultation process, before the road change. Did you take part?
If it’s not practical to go to the next junction and return on the other side, consider turning off at the previous junction and going around the side roads to the next juctiom.

  7. How far down do you have to go to come back up the road? Shouldn’t there be a right turn lane?

  8. I’d say this is an absolute pain to deal with.

If it were me, I’d happily add on 5mins to the journey to find somewhere to turn around and come at it from the other lane.

As others have said, contact the council to see if there’s a better solution if the closest safe turn around is too far away.

  9. If that’s accurate then you are crossing a hatched area to get into your driveway…….irrespective of whether its a fast lane or not you can’t cross over a hatched area so you should continue to the next available right turn and approach from the opposite direction turning left into your driveway……anything else is illegal and should you be involved in a crash you will be at fault

  10. You can turn across a single white line to enter a premises (not to enter a road) but you can’t turn across cross hatching. It’s basically to be treated as if it were a physical island on the road.

  11. You’re crossing an unbroken line. That’s against the law. You need to come at it from the other side. Otherwise you’re completely in the wrong and anything that would happen is your fault imo.

  12. Thats dangerous , I doubt you have a broken line there
City wants you to come back through U turn , you are basically taking a illegal shortcut to reach a place earlier

  13. Is it possible to continue driving and perform a safe turnaround ? As someone else said, the cemetery is full of people who were in the right.
I would probably do as you do But I wouldn’t want my loved ones doing it

  14. No such thing as a fast or slow lane, you are stopping in an overtaking lane so I’m not surprised people are getting angry. You need to carry on and find a safer place to cross to the other side. I’m not sure about right of way technicalities, but being dead or badly injured would suck.

  15. I would suggest finding a way to approach from the other direction. As in, if needs be, drive past your house and find a safer, more visible point to cross and then turn around so that your place will be on your left.

  16. ProtonPacks123 has it. I’d be making a U turn further down and come home in the far right lane as we look at the pic you’ve provided, taking a left turn into your house.
It’s hassle but it’s also not worth it, especially if you have others in the car.

  17. Can’t turn right across the road markings. You need to treat them as an island. You are in the wrong, I hate to say.

  18. Sooner or later you are going to cause a smash…you’ll be slowing down or stopped and a motorbike or other car will overtake a car straight into back of you… Go up further and turn back, or it could end very badly.

  19. You’re “supposed” to drive on and make a U-turn further up and then enter your driveway with a left turn. But I can’t see many people bothering to do that. Your insurance would care though if there was an accident.

  20. You and the neighbours need to either speak to the council or carry on straight until you find a roundabout or other safe space to do a U-turn, then drive towards your houses from the other side
