Figure out some extra tax credits or receipts you can upload so you owe less?
Could be a pay roll issue, happened me with USC a few years ago. For a similar amount.
Revenue will just reduce your tax credits for a couple of years until its paid off.
Any medical expenses? 20% return for each one
Do you work from home? You can claim some money back on broadband and electricity also (provided you don’t get a wfh allowance from your employer already)
Ask them what way you can pay? They might reduce your annual tax credits and it’d soften the blow a little bit.
PS the receipts includes the last few tax years worth so if you’ve any receipts lying around you can use those
Have you clicked on the breakdown of this? There could be a very obvious mistake. I saw I owed €4k the other day and nearly had a heart attack. Turned out the social welfare had sent over an annual figure of maternity leave when I only had 6 weeks.
I have the same issue for approx €600 from the last 4 years. Who’s fault is this? Should I have been keeping a closer eye on what I was paying ? How could I know if it was off?
Were you put on Covid payments by your company? Know a few peeps that were hit by that on revenue
You can pay back what’s owed over 12 months via payroll or in a lump sum I believe
You can actually payback over 4 years by reducing credits

The answer is to talk to them. Besides the other options you can also request a phased payment arrangement. https://www.revenue.ie/en/starting-a-business/paying-your-tax/phased-payment-arrangements/index.aspx
As always the information is on the Revenue website giving possible examples of where it could have come from and what to do.

Did you get an email alerting you of this too or was it just a notification when you logged in? I am scared to log in my ROS now lol
Did you not notice your tax deductions were on the low side all year
Had the same happen to me 5 years ago. The job had not been paying USC properly. Had a reduction of 500 per year for 2000 to my tax credits
Could be a range of issues
Reduced rates rates but exceeded 60k so lost the benefit so now standard applies
Or
On exempt USC but actually exceeded 13k
Or
Switched jobs and revenue provided both employers your srcop and credits so they were double used in the same month
Or
Covid pandemic payment for previous years that you didn’t declare and pay tax on and now revenue are collecting the tax on it
Etc
Ring them. Happened to me and I owed 1300, turned out it was a mistake and they owed me 200.
