Austria slides back into dependence on Russian gas

  1. Ah shit, I hope this trend will be reversed soon. Guess building LNG terminals is a bit tricky when you’re landlocked.

  2. From the article:

“**Imports of Russian gas into Austria are approaching market shares last reached during pre-war times, as Gazprom is once again delivering the total contracted amounts, while deliveries from Germany and Italy are dropping.**

Few countries relied as much on gas from Russia as Austria with some 80% of all its domestic consumption flowing from the east before the war in Ukraine. This was partly due to the gas deals Vienna struck with the Soviet Union in exchange for Asutria’s continued neutrality and non-alignment, starting in the 1960s.

“We are temporarily back at 100% [gas deliveries from Gazprom] at the moment, but have also seen values at 30% and below in the past,” explained Reinhard Florey, CFO at Austrian energy major OMV.

Indeed, the return of Russian gas into Austria is already visible in the data from December 2022.That month, while overall gas imports were lower than in previous years, Russian gas made up 71% of the total, according to data from ENTSOG and the Austrian regulator, E-Control.

On Tuesday, Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler called on Austrians to keep saving energy.

“We are not out of the woods yet,” she said, adding that saving gas would ensure storages are full for the coming winter.

Thursday, Austria’s gas storage facilities were 74.87% full.”

Austria, disappointing really…back to relying on Putin’s Terrorist Regime…disappointing.

  3. Of course they are!

Did they even try to move away from this dependence?

Or they were happy with the discounts they got from Putin from blocking over 25 million people from Schengen and raising the anti-EU sentiment a lot?

  4. I really feel bad for those nations that have been tricked into yet another fossil fuel dependence. And one that is geopolitically unsound at that.

  5. The austrian state has a long history of colluding with russia. Many western intelligence agencies flat out refuse to share any intel with Austrian counterparts because it is literally like CC-ing the Russian FSB and GRU in any reports.

A lot of heat is brought on the likes of Hungary for their pro putin stance (and rightly so) but Austria has flown under the radar with its very close ties to the kremlin. Its banking sector still operates in Russia and its government makes policy decisions which primarily help Russian interests.

  6. What the article fails to mention is that the gas imports overall have massively dropped. So the 70% Austria gets from Russia are still less in total numbers than the 63% in June. Compared to last years January, gas imports have probably halved even though Russia was already cutting the gas supply (even before the war). It’s still bad news though.

  7. Are there any Russian backed political parties pushing for that? We have those in Bulgaria, and they are pushing Russian propaganda like it is candy.

  8. Austria should have alot of hydro potential, perhaps with addition of nuclear power plants the country could rid itself from Russian dependence. Unfortunately it takes a long time to build those power plants so perhaps a temporary solution is needed until then.

  9. Austria needs to consider steering away from acting as Russian-sponsored foreign agent. Already on clear path of becoming EU-wide pariah.

  10. I mean they were never independent Gazprom just reduced deliveries. But now Gazprom needs every bit of money they can get so they deliver again.

As long as prices are not too crazy this is good for Austria, Europe and Ukraine. There is still a fundamenal lack of gas over the next year at least so every bit helps.

Pretty much every EU country would still buy Russian gas if Gazprom would deliver. Gas was never sanctioned for a reason, Russia just stopped delivering

  11. As an Austrian myself, the general consensus is that our sanctions harm ourselves disproportionally more than their intended purpose, so most are in favor of embracing neutrality, as that’s what we’re historically known for (since WWII ofc). Politically though pretty much all but the right wing party (FPÖ) follow the pro Ukraine and anti Russia agenda.

This has led to a rise in the popularity of the FPÖ, which is weird because now even the greens (former hippie party) are sorta supporting the war and people who are in favor of peace and the neutrality of Austria are voting the right wing party.

  12. They tried to steal the Romanian gas through OMV-Petrom and when they couldn’t they vetoed us out of Schengen.
