Another Nikos, is it a prerequisite for presidents to be named that in order to be eligible for office?
Nice! When are you going to take back the whole island?
This will be interesting.
He is a former memeber of the Anastasiadis government who broke ranks with DISY because DISY didn’t want to support his candidacy.
Now he beat the official DISY candidate and the candidate the left-wing AKEL supported.
DISY and AKEL are the two biggest parties in the Cypriot parliament though, so he will have to find a way to work with at least one of them (given that the 3 smaller parties that supported him in this election will be behind him).
Probably not much will change and it will be a continuation of the two Anastasiadis governments.
Cypriot politics are weird because of the illegally occupied north issue, you see e.g. the center-right and the left be closer to each other in this topic than the more nationalistic economically centrist parties.
If there’s any silver lining to this, is that it was a close election. Elections haven’t been competitive in Cyprus for a long time until now.
But to be honest, it’s gutting to see how consolidated reactionarism has managed to become. Five more years of this government, and with the liberal minority of DISY out of the picture now won’t be nice for the people on the ground.
Given that my only citizenship is that of Cyprus, I hope this diplomacy “genius” doesn’t accidentally get us be the second Hungary of the EU.
If we all put in two euros each we can give it to him and decide the Cyprus problem for ourselves. Man has a bigger for sale sign on his head than an empty house viewing.
Vladimir Putin is satisfied
Ah shit here we go again
Why are there Hebrew books in the background
Different cunt, same party. We deserve whatever happens to us at this point. Fucking idiots.
Those who voted for Nikos Christodoulidis were only doing it for one of the reasons below. If I forgot one or more please feel free to give more by replying.
1. Him having a more presentable face
2. “He’s not a leftist so he won’t bomb mari again.” (even though the other candidate wasn’t a leftist either)
3. Promised them or their children positions in the public sector.
I’ve heard all 3 reasons, all equally stupid.
For a moment there, I thought David Wallace from The Office (US) has a new job…
Stephen Colbert twin brother.
Nice tie, that’s a Salvatore Ferragamo.
As a forigner, who has no ideea of Cyprus political background .. would’ve been the other choice better for you people?
Praise Christ(odoulides)
What are the titles of the books behind him?
Firstly the centre right (DISY) candidate Neofytou would have been the best as he was against corruption, for uniting Cyprus, internationalist and for NATO and pretty reformist/liberal. Mavroyiannis was backed by the corrupt communist (AKEL) party who caused the 2012 financial crisis but Mavroyiannis does not actually have any ties to them, and was actually a diplomat under Anastasiades. As many attacked him for accepting an endorsement from the communists and that he was probably gonna partner up with them in the government formation for their support, he quickly announced he would appoint a technocrat finance minister to assure people he isn’t gonna crash the economy. He was also for Cyprus unification. Thirdly we have the winner and the next president of Cyprus; Christodoulides, the former foreign minister under Anastasiades. Christodoulides is seen as a nationalist and hardliner on the Cyprus unification, and was one of the motives behind the failed talks in 2017. He has closest ties to the incumbent president Anastasiades and was endorsed by him as well. DISY who selected the more liberal leader refused to endorse him which led to him being endorsed by smaller nationalist parties with left-wing to right-wing economic policies. All candidates are pro-EU, pro-sanctions on Russia and pro-status quo but Christodoulides is most likely to exactly continue Anastasiades policies. He is also likely to offer ministers to the parties that supported him to get parliamentery support. Anastasiades was pretty corrupt but moderate, so expect an continuation to that although Mavroyiannis would also have been similar with the biggest difference in the Cyprus question as he is very much for diplomacy, whilst Neofytou would have been the most internationalist (he even was pro-NATO application), and taken a more anti-corruption stance.
