The Duration of the European Colonial Empires

  1. Pfft, a bunch of one hit wonders, and then one glorious two hit wonders. And basically all in Europe (on hard mode).

  2. English and British should be combined tbh, Scotland only had a couple failed colonies before 1707 so the colonial empire of England seamlessly transitioned to become the British empire

  3. I assume Denmark here is supposed to end with the end of colony status for Greenland in 1953, but why does it begin just after the Kalmar Union collapses? What is the criteria here?

  4. What is the cut-off point when it’s no longer a colonial empire? Why do the British and Portuguese continue for longer than the French one? France today has like the largest amount of colonies still under their rule.

Denmark still holds on to Greenland and the Faroe islands, The Netherlands still have some islands in the Caribbean. And what about Norway, with their Svalbard, Jan Mayen and Bouvet?

  5. Weird that USSR is not included. It most definitely had puppet states and history of subjugating and annexing neighbours.

  6. Sweden actually colonized parts of Finland from the 12th century until the 19th century. I don’t know why it isn’t included.
