Bertie Ahern is 71, and has such generous pensions and substantial income from speaking engagements that he need never work again.
If he runs for president, do we think it would actually be for the good of the country? Or for the good of himself?
He will be popular internationally, because he can be bought.
FF’s best chance for the Presidency and also likely to command a large majority of people to vote against him. If the Shinners ran someone like Gerry, I could see Bertie winning though.
He will run for president.
His playbook will be this:
He will side step critism of the financial crisis and mahon and let a furver build capturing all the headlines and news helping getting his face out there. He will then have a soft touch interview with Miriam on primetime and will feign some crocidile tears about the break up of his marriage and use this to explain away mahon and bank accounts issue. “I was a broken man living in my constituency office. She helped me threw a terrible period in my personal life.”
In the same interview he will throw Cowan under the bus for 2008 by saying everything was grand when he left and that it was a global issue and lehmans etc. He will add some contrition admitting some mistakes and that they should have prepared more for rainy days.
The lick arses in the sunday indo will concentrate on his peace work in the north and will gaslight all day long about mahon and 2008. ‘We all partied but lets all pull on the green jersey now”
It basically found he was a lying corrupt thieving scumbag.
He won’t run and if he did it would be a colossal disaster for all involved.
Who would vote for him?
Not normal working class people or young people or old people or right wingers or left wingers. Maybe some old business friends… maybe. He’s testing the waters and judging by the responses he won’t go ahead.
King
Really shows FF haven’t learned anything. I might have gave them my 3rd /4 th preference vote but not now
There is a big gap from joining a political party as an ordinary member, to being that party’s candidate for the presidency. I would genuinely be gobsmacked if Fianna Fáil let him anywhere near the presidential election.
I don’t see it happening personally. If he did somehow convince FF that he was their man for the presidency, even with the Irish electorate’s notorious ability to be fooled, there are just too many normal people that got absolutely burned by the Celtic tiger shite, and got burned with long lasting consequences. And Those people are mostly in the age category that make sure they vote. He can’t spoof all that away and I think an early opinion poll would put paid to any delusions he had about being president.
Apart from being a scumbag politician, he is such a terrible speaker. Constant eh, um, eh, stop/starting & stuttering speech. Terrible for president, and as others have said rode on the backs of the peacemakers of the good Friday agreement.
