I suppose the new Scottish Independence polls didn’t look so hot for her future prospects?
Ultimately being a single issue party that is unable to act on its single issue is always going to be problematic.
Took power on a manifesto of fighting for new independence referendum, ended up having to actually govern the country for a decade, leads to a lot of infighting because the party is only actually in agreement about a single issue.
If I had to guess I’d say the back and forth with Westminster and within her own party, over the gender recognition bill is probably what finished her off. Or something particularly scandalous is about to come out and she, unlike our last few PM’s has decided to just go with a little grace. Interesting times.
Shittttt
Just a month ago Reddit was on about how she’d played a masterclass with her gender ID law and that Rishi had walked right into her trap by blocking it, with independence soon to follow.
4 weeks later successive polls show big drops in support for independence and her personal ratings, and support for the UK government’s actions. Then she resigns.
Just another reminder to never trust Reddit on anything
Genuinely surprised, she had a dip in personal popularity but even her opponents were saying that had been exaggerated.
SNP civil war anyone?
Sturgeon had the easiest job a politician could possibly have. Anything bad that happened was instantly blamed on Westminster, anything good was because of the SNP.
Granted she was a damn sight better than the tory shits she was compared to, but that is a fucking low low bar.
I think the £100k donation her husband gave to the party that she apparently knew nothing about may have something to do with it.
Oh no! Anyway…
I wonder if this is related to the police stepping up their investigation into the potential independence fundraising fraud? Sturgeon has dodged plenty of more prominent scandals than this recent GRA controversy, I’m wondering if this is jumping before being pushed.
Awesome.
Maybe it’s time to approach independence from a different angle. England should hold a referendum for England to leave the UK.
Good. And she should be investigated for possibly being a Kremlin shill for trying so hard to break up the united kingdom. I wouldn’t be surprised if Putin was throwing some money her way and the SNP in general to create the division.
But what changed? Yeah, her approval ratings dropped off but not to a point where it would have become dangerous. She just had enough then? That’s weird. Most other politicians have to be thrown out because they can’t get enough.
It’s a Honestly a shame because she is miles better than any other leader we have in our parliament, I understand people are blaming the poll numbers but generally from what I actually hear from folk in real life is that she’s still popular. The Gender Reforms Bill was definitely a Blow but she gained a lot more support in Young people because of it. I Just hope that whoever replaces her can be just as good as she’s been for Scotland, or at the very least be better than the Tories
She took a huge political gamble trying to lure the UK government into a trap with her gender reform law, assuming that the conservative government’s blocking of the law would play into the ‘Westminster is oppressing us!’ stereotype, and boost the SNP’s popularity and support for independence. She tried to present herself as the enlightened progressive being held back by a reactionary London government.
Unfortunately for her polls showed that the Scottish population didn’t actually support the law, her popularity dipped, support for independence fell, and here we are.
She is in my opinion, one of the most misreprestened figures in British politics.
Many labelled her as some left wing hero of the UK, who would do so much better as a leader of whole of the UK or an independent Scotland, but her ENTIRE support came from populism, a right wing strategy. She had very few ideas of her own (the latest one being very divisive) and NO answers to the real problems that would be created by independence. Much of her campaigning was VERY reminisent of the EU Leave campaign, lots of fantasy, lots of dreaming, an emotional argument with very little substance, yet she could not see the irony in it.
As a left-wing and heavily pro-EU Englishman, I despised her, but I admired her ability to convince people she was somebody that she isn’t. I believe the SNP does damage to UK politics as a whole, since they’re unwilling to work with the English left, they simply further divide the vote in a broken system.

Get woke, go broke Nicola!
I wonder which fishy named leader will get the role now…
Good i hope we can start to become a truly united kingdom
Good Riddance. Left a legacy of declining Health & Education, and turned her party into little trumpists with her own brand of politics of hate towards the English & Westminster.
It will be interesting to see who her SNP successor is and if Alex Salmond sees this as a return to the SNP with his Alba party merging with the SNP.
I’m British, English, pro Union and surprisingly torn about this. Obviously don’t want her project succeed but she seemed to be by far the most competent leader over the Brexit period. In the immediate aftermath of the vote the only coherent leadership of any kind seemed to be coming from Edinburgh.
I hope there will be a new election and SNP is not going to do what Tory did with Johnson et al.
