As a cyclist, how is this street supposed to be managed? (see comment)

  1. This is a street which has just been built. It connects to Mons’ bus depot, to the Grands Prés, and to the Avenue de l’Université (large street which is one of few ways to go across the rails to reach inner Mons). There is a building being built on one side, which doesn’t leave any sidewalk space. The other side is a narrow gravel sidewalk, then a hedge ; or space in front of a bowling.

From up to down, any car can come in. From down to up, only buses. Cycles are allowed to ride in both directions, according to the signs placed at each end. There are also ground markings indicating the cycle path and the bus lane.

Unfortunately, there are always 15-20 cars parked on the cycle path. I am also not sure it *is* a cycle path, for it lacks any formal sign.

Going up and down the bus lane isn’t really an option, because of the very high border. Staying on it neither, I don’t think it’s legal, and there’s quite a lot of buses, as this is the depot street. Crossing it to go all the way left isn’t really an option either, because it’s blocked by flower pots with a sort of hedge ; unless I do it from the previous crossroad.

Where is one supposed to drive a cycle, legally, in these circumstances? If it’s on the marked cycle path, what does one do considering it’s blocked?

  2. The best way to manage this is by calling the police saying there is a problem there which requires their attention and that will increase the town bank account and the tow trucker bank account.

    Have a nice day !

  3. By joining /r/fuckcars to vent your frustration over these asshole drivers that think the world revolves around them when they block a bike lane

  4. Since the police doesn’t care about you (cyclists), cycle in the bus lane and tell the bus driver to contact the police. Maybe the police listens to them.

  5. Can’t you use the left path?
Even though it’s a one way street there is a exception for cyclers to go both directions.

Pn. Yea cyclers don’t often get priority in city’s like they do in the Netherlands, cycling in Belgium city’s can be hectic.

  6. If it’s only a matter of riding in the bus lane for a minute while you overtake these parked cars, then you shouldn’t feel too bad about it. The bus driver will probably be understanding.

I would still send pictures to the police because this is illegal and creating a dangerous situation for cyclists. If they want easy money in the form of tickets and towing, then they will surely be interested.

If you’re not afraid of hurting yourself and getting into trouble you can also try making a video like Case Neistat : https://youtu.be/bzE-IMaegzQ

  7. Call the police. If they don’t care, as others say, take pictures too. Start a procedure with Comité P already if they do not take action. Optionally, ask the name of the non-urgent line operator when calling. This may help determine if it’s one bad employee or a cultural problem.

Parking on a bycicle lane is a second category infraction already, particularly if the bicyclist cannot pass safely anywhere else. I think minimum fine is 116 euro. x20 I am a bit surprised nobody shows up.

I both drive and bike, but fuck people who park on a bicycle path. I don’t park my bike in the middle of a road either.

  8. It feels like the cars aren’t allowed to park there since the middle one has no way of getting out (except for illegaly crossing the bus’s border)

  9. Would putting on a go pro and crashing into one and getting insurance money work? Would be a good scam
