Of hoe we mensen gebruiken om de snelheid van auto’s af te remmen. Ik heb dit altijd al een vreemd concept gevonden.
Dat er iets moet gebeuren met de Turnhoutsebaan is zelfs geen voer voor discussie, maar of fietsers als snelheidsdrempel gebruiken het goede idee is….
Er is niets zo goed als fietsers te dwingen de meest drukke baan te laten nemen met auto’s. Ik begrijp de redenatie hierachter niet. I.p.v. dan een rijbaan op te offeren voor een deftig fietspad dat afgescheiden is van het rest van het verkeer.

Well in a normal situation that’s just logical but in an emergency this is false. Traffic law has a specific bit that exempts priority vehicles from just about everything if the nature of their assignment justifies it. When they’re not responding to an urgent assignment emergency services need to obey traffic law like everyone else.
Trying to change the car=king mentality in Borherhout? Good luck with that.
Fietsstraten zijn zo belachelijk. Je mag opa die aan 5km/u fietst niet inhalen, zelfs al kun je volledig op het andere rijvak rijden om voldoende afstand te houden van de fietser?

Why haven’t those “fietsstraten” been declared a failure yet? They never change shit, I hate them because I always get overtaken anyway
And when there is a car driver who actually respects it it’s still annoying because if I’m going faster than the cyclist in front of me I can’t overtake both them and the car behind them

Just putting up some signs and calling something a ‘fietstraat’ is not a substitute for proper bike infrastructure. Fietsstraten can be very useful, but not like this.

I agree that it’s not a magical solution, but as someone living and working near/at the Turnhoutsebaan, this is very symbolic. People have been *begging* to make that street more safe for bicycles for over ten years, and a few years ago Koen Kennis (schepen van mobiliteit) replied that cyclists should stop cycling on the Turnhoutsebaan all together. Now the Flemish minister says the opposite. That’s pretty symbolic.
Edit: also I seriously always wonder why people want to drive there. It’s awful, slow, stress inducing, and the Plantin & Moretuslei is a very good alternative parallel road. Google Maps always wants to send me over the Turnhoutsebaan and I’m like “dude, NO”.
