Vaping is ‘the revenge of the tobacco industry’, says Micheál Martin

  1. >Vaping is the tobacco industry “coming back at” governments for indoor smoking bans, Tánaiste Micheál Martin has claimed.

Is it revenge or just capitalism working as intended

  2. Haha fuck me.

He talks like it’s a personal vendetta against him.

Big tobacco tries to make a profit like literally any other company on the planet, obviously what they sell is different, but this is what their beloved “free market” is all about.

  3. Maybe he should get them back by making it illegal for kids to buy them and banning disposable vapes

  4. Wasn’t it a case that vaping was an ignored niche product for the better part of it’s first decade when invented by a Chinese fella and that most of the producers in the space have nothing to do with the larger tobacco companies who responded in too late a fashion to take advantage of it.

Hardly big tobacco now is it Micky?

  5. i always assumed the tobacco industries hated vaping because it made people take that up instead of cigarettes, and were viewed as a competition

  6. Has Micheál been taking lessons from Leo. I hope we’re not going to have his opinion on something every second day

  7. This is a hilariously poor take on vaping and shows he has very little understanding. The tobacco industry would be delighted if vaping was outlawed altogether tomorrow. The tobacco industry has tried to make inroads into the vaping market but it’s still a tiny fraction of their revenue compared to traditional tobacco products. In the UK the NHS actually prescribes vaping products as smoking cessation aides. How they deal with vaping is one area where they are a lot more sensible than us.

Having said all that he’s right that measures should be taken to restrict access to under 18s even more than it is now. The first obvious step is to ban disposables. What’s more than likely going to happen though is blanket measures like huge tax increases and flavour bans across all vaping products which will in turn make it less likely someone will use it to quit smoking.

  8. I used tobacco for near on 25 yrs and gave it up in one day, used a cheap discount world vape for about 3/4 days after and have never gone near tobacco or nicotine vapes since. This man is an ignorant prick, a bloody dinosaur from the Catholic era of ban anything you don’t like. His type are against everything especially what they don’t understand.

  9. Micheál Martin – have hated this man for his utter hypocrisy regarding the smoking ban for what, twenty plus years now? I will spit on his grave.

  10. Is it not already illegal for kids to buy nicotine vapes?

I wouldn’t like to see it banned indoors. I’m not a smoker myself but there is no data for any kind of second hand negative effects

  11. I don’t think vaping is a form of revenge for the indoor smoking ban, revenge for the crippling tax on tobacco products maybe? €23.50 for a 30g box of tobacco here, and €12.20 for a 50g in England? 78c a gram here, 24c across the channel. Government is making a fortune in tax off the tobacco industry and in a short while they’ll be doing the same with vaping
