ULEZ expansion: London mayor Sadiq Khan warns objecting councils ‘you will fail’

  1. Well that’s for the courts to decide so it’s not really a very helpful comment.

But anyway these ULEZs are interesting given that 4/5 cars meet the standard to be free according to Khan.

The problem for me is that implies two things:

First that it won’t make a huge amount of difference if 80% are unaffected; and,

Second that those who are are likely to be those unable to afford to replace their cars. Which risks this being very regressive.

  2. So let me get this straight, one party in a legal dispute is sure that they’ll win so the other side should just give up.

Khan seems to have revolutionised the entire legal process here. Millions of pounds will be saved. We can tell suspects, “You are definitely going to lose, so just go to prison”. This will change *everything*.

  3. if he cared so much about pollution he wouldn’t be building the Silvertown tunnel in the most populated borough in London.

  4. Instead of focusing on this get funding to improve public transport to phase it out naturally. This has been proven to work in other countries. Slowly expand the car free zones.

  5. Really does suck (makes me laugh, but it sucks) about how the government spent all this time subsidising diesel COMMUTER vehicles only to turn around and slap a tax on those very people that took those subsidises who bought a new car to “save the planet”. Meanwhile, 20 year old petrol car? totally fine.

Kinda like how EVs are being treated right now…

This does really suck for commercial vehicles though. This could utterly ruin many MSB’s that require vans…

  6. >Mr Khan’s letter addresses the four Conservative borough leaders by their christian names but tells them their potential grounds for a legal challenge are “wholly without merit and misconceived’.

How is this paragraph that relevant? Christian names? Why don’t you just say formal name. I don’t find many articles where they state someone used ChRisTiAn NaMeS.

  7. Am I missing something here or could they have just used the money to fight this bullshit charge to invest into local transport?

We as taxpayers hold the most wealth, since we all pay into the same pot why is it that they seem to only find ways that are either corrupt or negatively damaging?

  8. Wasn’t the ULEZ expansion a stipulation of the TFL bailout by the national government?

So this would be local tory council objecting to the national tory government. With the labour mayor of london in the middle.

  9. Guys actually scum, money grabbing asshole. Plays off identify politics to get support. Hate him. By the way no I’m not racist l, I have nothing but support for immigrants and second/third generation immigrants. Guys no interest interest in social cohesion. F*CK him

  10. The expansion seems to me grossly unfair, and would have been far better done through natural wastage. How many 90s era cars/vans are on the road now? Hardly any, and many less in a year or two’s time. I’m all for reducing air pollution but let’s do it fairly please, the result will be the same.
