So start seriously discuss decriminalisation for some substances & full legalisation for others?

That removes the majority of the power, money, violence & crime associated with drug supply.

It also frees up substantial policing resources and budgeting that could be reallocated to areas where they could do significant positives rather than just the pointless cycle of tail chasing the current system does to police drugs.

The legal status of drugs doesn’t really affect the level that people are taking them. I think that’s pretty clear at this stage. Not fully exploring other available options is deliberately burying your head in the sand.

  2. Please stop using drugs. Simon says.

This little hot take of yours is no surprise, Simon. If your party hadn’t kicked the citizens assembly so far down the road maybe we’d be on the way to more sensible policies.

  3. Perhaps Mr Harris would be interested in mandatory drug testing for gardai and politicians every Monday morning?

  5. Yes Simon, all that ***drinking*** does support violence and crime. What are you going to do about it? Or is that drug ok because the Vintners is the country’s biggest and most successful lobby.

  6. As Minister for Justice maybe he should read the Joint Committee of Justice report published in December which recommends regulation of certain drugs as an answer to this issue instead of shaming people who use drugs.

  7. I agree wholeheartedly with this sentiment.

When you buy a bag, think of the hands it passed through, the violence associated with the lifestyle of importing and distributing an illegal substance.

Which is one reason why I will never touch the stuff, but also why I think these drugs should be decriminalised, taxed and regulated.

  8. Why isn’t there bodily autonomy when it comes to the right of what drugs an adult can take? We can buy our alcohol and nicotine, two deadly drugs that destroy and kill millions every year.

  9. The government created the black market in the first place. This is entirely a problem of their own making. Rather than just dealing with drug abuse we are now dealing with organised crime gangs with international cooperation money.

I 100% blame the governments policies for drug related crime.

  10. Forget housing and health – it’s much more important that we stop people having a good time on the weekends (unless of course they spend their money on A1 carcinogens in pubs) with their bizarre liking for substances that mankind has been using for thousands of years.

  11. The USA has spent $1 trillion dollars on the war on drugs since 1971 and drugs are more prevalent than ever. Portugal and Switzerland decriminalised drug use and they have had fantastic results.

  12. The government are trying to put out a _shitload_ of articles like this, and other bullshit distraction topics, to try and bury some other story.

    Bury what, though?

  13. This should say

“Criminals selling drugs supports violence and crime’

    – reason they stopped prohibition in the state’s

  14. When Simon Harris was minister for health he wouldn’t meet with drug policy advocacy groups. He has no interest in evidence based approaches despite him throwing out that rhetoric in this speech.

  15. It’s interesting that they keep spouting the same thing decade after decade. Yet the numbers of users keeps increasing. Can they not take a hint? No one gives a shit. If they want to escape, they will do so. Realise your fucking mistake and change drug policy instead. It’s actually infuriating to hear the same shit day in and day out and somehow these monkey brains expect people to heed their plea.

Christ. I feel stuck in a fucking loop.

  16. Maybe if drink wasn’t so dear and everyone wasn’t given 5 hours to get as pissed as possible it wouldn’t be as prevalent

  17. Weekend drinking is way worse but he hasn’t got the bottle to go after anything unpopular. Shows you that his moral high ground is purely fictitious.

  18. The youth today are fucked. I know lads who buy a bag of coke, snort it and go to the gym????? Wtf is wrong with these loons. Go sit in a field with a flagon, few mates and a 10 spot of scaldy soap bar. Madness

  19. To be fair, Simon isn’t talking about people with addiction issues. The plan for them is to continue to do nothing. This is just to stop people who think it’s fun to have fun at the weekend.
