Can’t pay more if you don’t eat in restaurants anyway!
To put this in perspective, if a restaurant costed an item at €10 they currently need to sell it for €10.90 and with the change it will now be sold for €11.35. Approximately an additional 45c for every €10 spent. Restaurants will undoubtedly need to up prices, why should they take the hit on tax collection for the govt but worth keeping in mind how much prices should increase by
“Only the strongest restaurants will survive an increase”
That’s exactly the way it’s supposed to be. Why the fuck should we waste tax payer money on supporting unsustainable businesses? Don’t say its to keep jobs because there is currently a labour shortage so there will be no problem finding work elsewhere for the staff.
The government isn’t there to save everyone’s job
It’s not possible
I don’t remember anyone in hospitality passing on the decrease back in 2020..
I’m going to say it now,
Fuck that sector.
They didn’t pass on the VAT to the customer and have been a rip off since covid
Why? The reduction was never passed on so should stay the same
We don’t mind
“I’ll actually be delighted to see you go out of business”, this random reddit poster warns in return.
They didn’t pass that decrease on in the first place, they just used it to line their own pockets and/or get even sloppier in how they ran their business. For those threatening increases now, yes I do hope they go bust.
Wow. People in this thread more than happy to accept PUP or wage subsidy scheme during covid but complain that the VAT reduction wasn’t passed on when restaurants physically couldn’t open? Does anyone here know how money works?
Any businesses who wholesale pass that increase onto customers will be in danger of going out of business. The hospitality industry here loves overplaying their hand. They’re already too expensive, another price increase will only further reduce their customer base.
Ah the weekly tantrum from the hospitality industry demanding special treatment and pretending that customers will only start to pay rip-off prices if they don’t get it, I was worrying it was late.
Bunch of wankers.
The hospitality industry are the absolute best at scaremongering. It’s an art form to them. They’re threatening that prices will rise and jobs will be lost if the VAT rate is scrapped, at the same time they’re raising prices as we speak and crying out for staff.
Will I??
We didn’t get to pay less when it was introduced…
16 quid for a burger and a few chips last week – in a pub, served in a piece of slate – . Never eating out again
I get the frustration with the VAT decrease not being passed on, but that was actually the whole purpose of the reduction.
It was designed by the government to act as essentially a grant for the industry without the state directly forking out.
Keep your price the same > we’ll reduce the VAT rate > you pocket the difference to help you through this time
A flawed idea if there ever was one (doesn’t work when restauants are closed due to lockdown!) and should have been removed probably a year ago.
But the anger over restaurants ‘not passing on the VAT cut’ is frankly idiotic
Hospitality sector has completely took advantage of Irish people for the last number of years…. Was out last week and paid nearly €20 for a basic burger and chip. Felt extremely over charged for what we had. I will just be dining out a lot less from now on I guess.
I hope this will end Eddie Rocketts.
Thats fine, just stop eating out.
You put up the prices, people stop going.
Cop the fuck on.
I think I’ll stick with my 2 large apache pizzas for 24 euro thank you very much
These guys were laughing all the way to the bank during covid, now that it’s their turn to bend over and take a hit.
Their business models are unsustainable if they think people are going to pay 30 euro for a burger or 8 euro a pint.
So be it
Restaurants should not be subject to the re-introduction of the higher vat rate. Only accommodation should be. They are the ones who shafted everyone, not the restaurants.
It won’t be just the VAT on your restaurant bill that will be going up, your energy bill is at VAT @ 9% if the VAT is removed from hospitality it will be removed from your energy bill and that will be increased.
VAT is 10% in Australia. I think that’s the perfect rate tbh
The reduction was never passed in the first place.
Can we get a list of which restaurant owners are saying this so we can avoid them for being greedy?
Went out for dinner for our wedding anniversary in November, couldn’t get over the price of it. A nice but standard Turkish restaurant. We said there and then we’re done with dining out. I’m not saying everyone else is going to follow suit lol but I just think it’s a luxury at this stage instead of a treat.
Restaurants ‘will see less business’ if prices increase, Diners warn.
We could do with a few of them closing. Good riddance.
Ask me bollix
Hahahaha, They didnt put the price down when it was introduced. hahahahaha
Price increase after price increase makes Ireland less and less enjoyable. I can eat good Western food , never mind Asian food, in Asia cheaper than I can get it in Ireland now. That’s kind of crazy.
Plus the quality of a lot of places in Ireland is very patchy. Probably due to a lack of trained chefs abd low expectations from a lot of customers e.g. kids meals being fried shit or a lot of customers not even eating vegetables. The restaurants and takeaways in the ‘burbs are sooooo bad. You got a few good ones in Dublin city centre but who wants to go in there over the age of 30 plus.
There’s good foodstuffs avaliable in Ireland but eating out and takeaways in general, the value is so poor.
It’s becoming a boring country to live in I hate to say it…..and its very strange because people in general never earned so much..but when you realise the government taxes over 50% of all income and earnings and savings it makes more sense.
Here they go adding more tax again.
Make no mistake YOU the consumer and worker will be paying that tax.
I paid 12euro for a chicken fillet roll, a latte & a packet of crisps in a petrol station and i had to eat that in my car.
I can handle an extra 4euro on my annual meal out in an actual restaurant.
