School absenteeism hits record level in Francophone Belgium

  1. Between the end of August and December 2022, more than 23,000 pupils had at least nine half-days of school absence, i.e. 32.5% more than in December 2021 and 90.5% more than in 2019.
The figures, reported this Wednesday by Le Soir, Sudinfo and L’Avenir, are based on figures from the Minister of Education of the Walloon-Brussels Federation, Caroline Désir (PS).

In other words, 2.6% of schoolchildren in the French Community are absent from school. Faced with this increase, the minister refers to “the increasing complexity of school-family relations” since the Covid crisis. All levels of education are concerned by this increase in absenteeism, but ordinary secondary education is the most affected (+33.5%).

  2. If I recall my classes (*I mean university-level, ‘educational sciences’ classes*) correctly this is only an increasing trend… did we ever try to seek out why, though? Or how to solve it?

We could only have theories, in class. But given it was a few years ago maybe they looked into it. Right?

  3. Not everyone gives the extra mile effort when public transport strikes/delays/whatevers again.

Bullies (both teachers and students) i see way more kids just staying home rather than getting bullied.

That’s some of the things i can think of
