I was always asking Portuguese folks on this website how they could explain their government being made up of social democratic + socialist supporting parties and yet allow a brutal neoliberal system to continue. I never got a good answer, because there was never a good defence.
Glad to see their useless government is finally trying to live up to their name – albeit still falling far short of what they need to do. The housing market in general needs to be purged of the private speculators. Look towards Vienna or Singapore for inspiration, where the public authorities have a much bigger say.
Affordable housing is inherently low-margin, and thus unattractive. You can’t get profit-seeking companies to invest in it unless you force them. So it’s better to just take over the sector instead. Housing should be seen in the same vein as healthcare or education. It should primarily be regarded as a public utility, rather than a private luxury.
Isn’t it like… to late? Freaking oligarchs already have full Portuguese citizenship. How much worse it can get? Just go all in and you’ll be an interesting case study.

Good move tackling rent prices.
