like seriously, they get overpaid like hell and still act like spoiled brats who think THEY are the middle of the damn universe.
lol, my toxic acquaintance was part of it. I remember him vividly bragging about “having nothing to do all day while playing videogames and getting paid 140k/yr” a couple of yrs ago.
He also said something in the line of “Waiters don’t deserve to have a living wage since their work isn’t as important”. Yikes.
Edit: If you read this Paul;
**gg, get fucked!**
Had to show you how =VLOOKUP and =COUNTIF works while you simultaneously call yourself “Mister Excel” at work. What a fucking joke you are.
edit2: I’m talking about a single guy. Not about all the employees at Google.
Regarding how much money „Zooglers“ allegedly earn I couldn’t care less. If you have such a high income it’s your responsibility to save some money for the rainy days (not even necessary in CH but you know what I mean).
Also Google people mostly appear very entitled and have this aura of feeling superior to everyone so if they are really that good, they don’t have to fear anything because they‘ll find an even better job in no time.
Oh no, guess we’ll have to use Bing now.
Jesus Christ what a toxic thread.
The level of bitterness in this thread is sad.
I don’t think cribbing about the salaries that Google engineers earn, or advising them about how they should have saved money is the right attitude to have. These are individuals who have been told a layoff is coming for nearly a month, and they are understandably anxious about it.
>They called on Google to engage in dialogue with an employee committee, as dictated by Swiss law, about alternatives to job cuts and support for foreign nationals whose residency is tied to their employment, Fitze said. They are also seeking a commitment from the company to refrain from further job cuts, he added.
These are very reasonable demands.
My last company had a layoff, and they did indeed have a consultation with us about it and we were allowed to submit a counter proposal as to how certain jobs could be saved. We were told that this is part of the Swiss Law.
I know multiple individuals (non-EU) who are working in Google and are on a B permit. Non-EU folks have to renew their B permit each year. If Google laid them off, they would need to find a job before their permit expires. For some of them, their permit could be expiring in a couple of months. That is not necessarily enough time to find a job, and the job market for CS jobs is rather lukewarm these days.
I really dislike the idea that we should dislike Google folks because they earn a lot. It is a highly competitive job, and people who work there have worked hard to get in. They might be earning more than 1.5 times from what I make (working in the same field), but it’s not like they were handed that on a silver platter. They worked for it. Begrudging them for it is unfair.
As someone who works in the IT Cybersecurity space and has a “big pay check”, I must say that my paycheck isn’t enough for all that I do…
I work during the day supporting the customers, helping them get their environment secured, follow good practices, pay attention to detail, make sure they are protecting their customers (probably some of you) and at the end of the day I need to keep myself up-to-date.
What’s valid today and what we take as granted changes faster than we (humans) can keep up, and hence the working long hours, studying on my personal time and trying to keep this all under balance.
My work life balance is inexistant since way before covid pandemic came, and it’s still bad “after” covid. I recon there are a lot of slackers in IT, but there are a lot of good, hard working professionals too.
I’ve seen people get hired because of their gender, sexual orientation, skin color, etc. not knowing 2 facts about IT! But hey, need to keep everyone happy right?
I have to work 3x as much just to cover those paychecks too…
My very little personal time is spent with my kids and my wife… My friends tell me I’m not cool anymore because I’m barely available… So… Yeah…
Not everyone in this area is an opportunist… Just saying.
Feel free to hate, at this point I don’t have feelings either.
Poor googlers lol
Oh no!
Anyway…
Oh, shit, they missed one of their last free lunches! OK, I suppose they get it later anyhow. Or carried food-to-go. Or got a real big brunch.
The irony of the Swiss complaining that Google employees are whiny and entitled is too much.
Wow, some people here are really bitter. I understand it to some degree, but it seems unhealthy.
Being part of this industry, I always despised Google culture. I visited their old offices in Zürich many years ago, and what was supposed to be inspiring and cool felt strange and creepy to me. They showed us a literal playground for adults, with a slide and swings. There was no wine on tap yet, but the booze was there. Relaxation rooms, too. But there were normal offices, too, and back then, Google had the reputation of hiring only the best and brightest. Their hiring process was insane, with many rounds to go through. This led to an incredibly elitist company culture, with many people being technically brilliant but also hard to work with.
Along the way, something changed over the years. Their hiring process was watered down or started putting the focus on different “qualities”. If you take into consideration fluctuation, Google globally hired about 100k people in the last three years. How many of those do you think had to go through the multiple rigorous technical interviews of the old days? Something must have changed. Throughout FAANG, there are a lot of braggers, showing off their company culture and how little work they apparently did. That was a sick development.
I guess 2023 is the year where big tech is getting rid of people they hired carelessly since the start of the pandemic. And Google being Google, they absolutely suck at communication. This creates anxiety among staff, and it doesn’t matter whether you are a hard worker or a bragger. It feels like you can wake up to a message on your private phone from a coworker that they can’t sign into their company account anymore, and that they want you to check yours. That’s how you know in these companies.
Having delivered many door dash curries to these guys on bycicle during the pandemic because I work in aviation I lack any compassion. Not proud of it, but hey maybe go to Ibiza instead of Seychelles this year and you’ll be fine.
Google treats their contractors like shit, now they get a taste of their own medicine. Cry me a river.
Yeah I mean you find a lot of douchebags in the field, especially at Google, but that doesn’t mean they’re shouldn’t be entitled to protection from Swiss law – saying otherwise for any reason is just letting Google get away with shit. I may hate the entitled twats (which is not all of them) but if you give big companies an inch then they’ll take a mile.
These are Swiss employees who are are entitled to discours with their employer to find a solution that is more amenable to both sides – as much as possible. Companies here have flexible hiring and firing, which I believe is a good thing, we also have fewer strikes and/or lockouts, also a good thing. All this good comes with obligations for both the employeers and employees, and Google has to respect that too.
It was known, that the huge numbers of people they let in the last 3 years would some day surge down. Especially the last 1-2 years a lot of people who did not have the proper qualification joined.
Google is not the „end level“ anymore where your CV was set in gold. Those days are over and will get even worse with the influx of people who got fired now. I think a lot of companies will notice this now.
It‘s going to be interesting how Google will position itself now, since they also don‘t seem to do that good.
I am a union organiser, not at Syndicom, but we work closely.
They are well aware of the fact that yes, engineers at google earn a ton, and they have better benefits than most other workers, yet, they still are workers, and they still work under swiss laws.
Syndicom already intervened a couple of years ago against google because the director of Google prohibited the formation of a Personal Kommission and the Regierungsrat had to send a letter to the director of google telling him that we are not in the US and that union busting and such is illegal here.
I am quite appaled by the hate some of you show towards these workers. US capitalism and wage slavery really have gotten to y’all.
Workers unite. We should all earn as much as them, don’t tear them down
It’s not nice going through a reorg even if you survive – we had ours last year (another big, famous company).
It was made much worse by local laws which drag things out for months for “consultations” – which no big company is going to pay the slightest attention to – they’ve made the plans for better or worse – simply agonising. It would have been infinitely healthier to come in one day, find out there’s a reorg and find out if you survive or not – like in the US. 6 hours of worry, not 6 months.
It is doubly bad for more junior employees who have to hang on for greater periods for extended “consultations” with employee councils who frankly don’t speak for the majority.
