Hi everyone,
Zunächst einmal muss ich mich dafür entschuldigen, dass ich auf Englisch schreibe: Mein Deutsch ist schlecht und meine Grammatikfehler auf Deutsch tragen nicht zur Verständlichkeit bei.
This might seem like a stupid question, it probably is and I’ll slap my forehead, but please help me!
My partner and I need to insure a small apartment. I went through [check24.de](https://check24.de) looking for structural homeowners insurance (like leaks, flood, walls, fire etc) as well as contents insurance. For Wohngebäudeversicherung , the options are: einfamiliehaus, doppelhaushalfte (semidetached), reihenhaus, and Mehrfamilienhaus. I chose the latter for our apratment, as our flat is in an apartment building, but now they want square meters for the entire building and more (how many units etc, method of heating) – as if I am to insure the entire building.
What am I missing? My German language skills aren’t great, but even when I understand the literal meaning, things don’t make sense!
How do you insure one single flat for structural damage (we’ll need contents insurance as well, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it)? I understand the communal areas are covered by hausgeld, but i want to insure us against floods and stuff inside the flat.
I’m starting out at this URL [https://wohngebaeude.check24.de/whg/allgemeine-angaben/](https://wohngebaeude.check24.de/whg/allgemeine-angaben/) because this is what I understood I was looking for. But the options seem only to include an entire block of flats, or a house. No single condo unit option.
The only other option in check24 is for household CONTENTS insurance.
Thanks in advance

Your mixing up two different things!
1.
When you’ve an Appartment inside a building with more Appartements then the (Wohn)Gebäudeversicherung is usually already existing, ask your neighbours which own a flat there too or the Hausverwaltung about it! This is an insurance about having a water leak in the cellar, a hole in the roof,… and maybe, but often additional and expensive against a lightning strike, flood from a river (Elementarversicherung); Having an insurance against a fire was mandatory (Feuerversicherung) untill 1994 but maybe today it’s part of the (Wohn)Gebäudeversicherung;
2.
What you want to have a look into is an insurance about the values of your Haushalt, that is the furniture, the bed, the couch, the kitchen, electric machines, maybe your bikes,… thats the Hausratversicherung.

No need. If your post had been in German, we’d have removed it, as this is an English-language subreddit.

AFAIK that kind of insurance (for the building, not your movable property) would be covered by the Eigentümergemeinschaft (that is the community of all owners), via the Hausgeld, and such insurances are mandatory. You can’t just insure a single flat with a building insurance anyway.
This sub is english language anyways.
Are you owning this appartment or renting it?
You‘re looking at the wrong thing. Mehrfamilienhaus means that you own the whole appartment building.
Honestly I‘d call an insurance broker and talk to them instead of going through websites like this.
Wohngebäudeversicherung is not really a thing for a unit in a homeowner association. The whole building is insured, not the individual unit.
>stuff inside the flat
That is what the Hausratversicherung is for.
