According to r/damthat’sinteresting, this is a Norwegian prison cell. Looks like a college dorm room to me.

  1. Yup, we frequently have posts like this posted and cross-posted here. Do you have any other comment, or maybe a question to accompany the picture? If not, my question to you would simply be: *So what?*

  2. Well, does say something about college dorm rooms, doesnt it. Unis put two-three in them and make you get a loan for the room and food.

  3. Well yeah, prison is a place you go to pay your time and turn your life around.

In Norway, the percentage of inmates who go back to prison (for a new crime) after release, is 30%. In the us I believe its 82% according to the first thing that popped up on google when I looked it up.

  4. Good, the point of prison is to take away someones freedom for various reasons, not make them suffer just for the sake of it.

  5. Well, according to crime rate and crime recidivism rate, it seems to be working pretty well. What’s your point?

  6. Well, here in Norway some people started wondering if treating inmates like people would help them turn their lives around, so they tried it out and it worked
Then we just kept doing that

  7. Ex inmate here. I have been to ringerike, finnestad, åna, hoff and berg prison and I can attest that this is indeed a prison cell. Most prisons have this standard cells although a bit worn down the old ones. The focus is on rehabilitation so you have to work or go to school 6 hours a day at minimum. Other than that you have 1 hour yard time, and 2-4 hours of free time in the social zone. Locked in about 11-16 hours depending on the day. Weekends are mostly locked in. You also have the option to work out an hour every two days.

  8. I visited a prison for school once and they were very clear on the only thing you can’t have is your freedom. You should be comfortable and have your dignity, but you can’t leave.

  9. Current prisoners are daughters and sons, friends and family, moms and dads and former and future neighbors.

Norway strives to treat them accordingly.

Helping law-breakers reform and make amends – treating them as we would wish our errant but loved nearest to be treated – helps our society be saner and safer.

  10. Yeah we dont do for profit prisons. We do for profit society and that involves rehabilitating the incarcerated. Once they get out there should be no hindrance to get a job and live a normal life. I’ve been to prison and albeit not for long the time lost was enough of a lesson for me.. The ones that work in prison also have an extensive education and treat inmates as human beings. Not everyone can be rehabilitated but it’s a really good system.

  11. We used to have a system where revenge and punishment were the main topic. Then in the ’90s, two prison guards were killed. After a bit of pondering, we came up with this system instead. And lo and behold, it worked better.

But you can’t just change the prison system. You can’t just kick a convict out of his/her cell and wish him/her good luck. There has to be a system in the society in general that supports them. Yes, it’s called a welfare state. And to some it screams of socialism. Even here. But it works. The cost of every crime prevented, robbery or murder, is money that can be spent on education or healthcare.

  12. Hi guys. I was in a prison called Vestoppland prison on Slidreøya. It is a prison without fences at all. it is all based on the trust of the inmates. The inmates also live in old camping cabins with four inmates in each of them. you can fish or do other outdoor activities. if you sign in, you can walk freely on the island for 45 minutes before you have to sign in and can go into the forest again and pick mushrooms and berries that can be used in food or as an accessory to the fish you have caught

  13. The most important for a prison is to learn the inmate to be respectful, get an education and give back to the society. Nothing wrong in treating inmates with respect. Treat inmates like garbage and they will behave like garbage when they get out.

  14. Prison is SUPPOSED to be a way to reform criminals NOT a money making scheme by the government that has a rotating door policy like where I live
