Looks like a Gozitan ftira to my foreign eyes, but I guess it depends on the type of dough as well.
I call that a ‘ftira’, my grandmother makes these with dough, potatoes, tomatoes, garlic, pepper, capers, olives, and anchovy/tuna. Im sure Im missing some ingredients though.
A few bakeries still make these, and Ive seen them in some restaurants too. Usually called “ftira ghawdxija” or something along those lines.
Yes Maltese style pizza has potatoes, Gozitans claim it’s theirs and I think they really were the ones that came up with it
Every time I see ‘Maltese’ pizza it has (if I recall correctly) eggs and sausages … I’m going to have to check it out next time I’m in gozo …
Edit: I’m being downvoted but literally these are the ingredients on the pizza called ‘Maltese’ on the restaurant menu.
Ftira Għawdxija
Omg kebab pizza is included, I feel so seen
You identify as a Maltese Pizza? /s
Your baked aunt? I see her every week down at gzira
Regardless if it’s technically a pizza or not. You’re missing out if you haven’t tried it. 10/10
The difference between an Italian style pizza and the ‘Maltese’ (Gozitan would be more accurate) one is that the Maltese one is made using bread dough, hence the name ‘Ftira’ (which is a type of Maltese bread, yum yum). And yes, the traditional one definitely calls for potatoes.
Mekren and Forn tal Ghawdxi both offer this pizza in malta. It’s very tasty and nice to be included in a chart like this.
Technically Gozitan… or Maxokkan
As far as i know that is technically Gozitan pizza not maltese. But yes what makes it so is the potatoes. Ive seen before but more popular around gozo.
It’s called ftira in Gozo
Most of these aren’t even pizza.
That’s exactly what you call Gozitan ftira
It is ta. It’s Gozitan more than anything. That alongside unmm the pizza with Maltese sausage are considered Maltese pizza.
More than sure that there is a pizzeria in Birkirkara that serves it

I wouldn’t call that pizza.

Most of those listed sound bad. The Maltese pizza listed is based on the “Gozitan ftira” as the others said.
There is a very good Italian restaurant in Malta with multiple locations doing pizza and pasta. Go there, not here. Vecchia Napoli
There is some in Gozo. Tal Furnar in Xaghra for example.
my mum makes it every now and then and she isn’t even maltese lol. I think the photo is correct.
