> Amid the scandal over the deepening of the Bystroe Canal, which Romania opposes and which Ukrainian authorities say is “only for maintenance”, Ukraine’s Ministry of Infrastructure says in a Twitter post that navigation depth on the Bystroe Canal has increased from 3.9 to 6.5 metres, for the first time since the country declared independence. The ministry’s message contradicts Saturday’s claims by the Ukrainian embassy.
> Romania’s transport minister Sorin Grindeanu announced on Wednesday that there are signs that Ukraine is currently dredging the Bystroe channel, which could have an impact on the environment and the Danube Delta, and that the Foreign Ministry and the Environment Ministry must come up with a position and inform. Asked about the recent meeting hosted by the Ministry of Transport between representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Public Works regarding the fact that Ukraine has started deepening works on the Bâstroe canal and would do the same on the Chilia arm, Grindeanu said that there are international treaties in force that must be respected by everyone, because there is a possible impact on the Danube Delta and the environment.
> The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday that it had not received any information from the Romanian authorities on the execution of works to deepen the Bâstroe canal and reiterated Romania’s position that it does not agree with the proposal to include the Chilia and Bâstroe arms in the European TEN-T transport network. The Ministry of Environment also announced that neither Romanian nor Ukrainian national legislation allows works to be carried out in the area that would endanger biodiversity. Ukraine’s deputy infrastructure minister Yuri Vaskov announced on Friday that negotiations on the extension of the Black Sea grain corridor will start within a week.
They do them!
It’s amazing how quiet all the environmentalists are
Braindead moment.
Super dumb by our government, Romania should make as much fuss as possible, because I doubt they’ll listen to our environmentalists
its not worth it to destroy the delta for this
We always had cold relations with UKR. Foolish me for thinking that anything changed after the war.
Not cool, man, Danube Delta shouldn’t be messed with. This also leads to our politicians taking a stand or risk losing face.
While I do support Ukraine in their fight with Russia, they should be reminded that western and romanian support doesn’t mean you can do any shit you want to do and get away with it just because you’re having a tough time in another matter.
If you have a shitty attitude towards us we will have a shitty attitude towards you as well.
And the most pro-American/anti-Russian politicians said we shouldn’t even talk about this subject, because “Geopolitics matter more than ecology”.
Just because Ukrainian govt has been improving recently does not mean the post soviet rot is gone. Romania & EU (and possibly with UN help) should pressure Ukraine to stop this. Since Ukraine is closer to the EU than ever before, they should have even more leverage over Ukraine to use. Just say that Ukraine has to follow EU’s environmental rules to keep the candidacy.
This is just another shortsighted “solution” that will only cause more problems in the future. There are better ways to increase Ukrainian economy activity without destroying other nations environments negligently.
Before all Romanians continue shitting on UA:
Sulina arm was reduced from 92 to 64 km, and its flow more than doubled, thus making it suitable for large-vessel navigation.
Sfântu Gheorghe arm was reduced from 108 to 70 km, and its flow also increased.
Increases were made to the detriment of the Chilia arm, which at present remains the most unspoiled arm of the main three. (Bystroe canal is here)
RO destroyed 2 out of 3 arms. UA wants to destroy final one. There is no good guy in this battle.
One of the solutions would be profit sharing with UA or offering permanent free usage of already industrialized arms. Or if RO is adamant about keeping delta unspoiled, close its port and return delta to original state. Then after Bystroe it will be only 1 out of 3 and delta will be better of then before.
Why is it so quiet around here??? Do people know what Danube Delta is and means?? Where the fuck are all the environmentalist?
Bystroe has nothing to do with the war against Russia. It won’t help Ukraine at all in the matter of the war. So why even be so fucking quiet about it?
Ukraine want’s to deepen the canal to 8 meters.
Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for the Environment seems he doesn’t care about the best preserved river delta in Europe and doesn’t have a reaction on
this.
