Stop UK mobile and broadband firms ‘lining their pockets’, urge consumer experts

  1. When your next abroad check out a mobile/broadband shop and compare the prices and data packages to ours, you’ll see how badly we are ripped off here.

  2. Yes we’re being ripped off, we all need phones and they’re all getting more expensive, usual capitalist monopolistic bullshit, but also people should be aware that there are cheaper ways to do things. On r/ukpersonalfinance there’s always someone paying £90/m or more for their phone. If you buy the phone outright it can sometimes be cheaper, but the big thing is to go to third party sellers like fonehouse. I got the new Samsung with an amazing contract for about 40% cheaper than direct through Vodafone.

  3. Yea, O2 just emailed to kindly let me know my contract will be going up by RPI + 3.9% I’m April. They also kindly let me know that this will be an increase of almost 18% if inflation stays at currently levels.

  4. Just got a message from EE to say they’re tacking on a £5 CPI increase to my £30 a month contract, to cover inflation and increased running costs, I only took the contract out in November.

What’s the point of a contract if they can just change the price whenever they feel like it? Also what kind of shitty business are they running if they can’t factor those increases into contracts in advance? They don’t do it because it’s a scam, it’s a bait and switch, and blatant profiteering.

I’d be very interested to know if EE’s shop and call center staff will be getting pay rises to match inflation, given that staff wages are part of their running costs?

This shit should be illegal, a contract where they can unilaterally raise the price is no contract at all.

  5. I pay £8 for SIM only. £23 for broadband which averages 60MB.

The real travesty is phone networks taking away previously included bonus features and roaming for free post-Brexit.

  6. Imagine a country that was one of the leading countries in terms of telecommunications technology keeping a nationalised telecommunications infrastructure and service that was able to prioritise coverage, service and low prices. Imagine a country with long term strategic plans that involved investing in infrastructure that focussed on long term benefits than short term costs. Imagine the profit a few wealthy people would have missed out on!

  7. I got out of my contract early because of the 14.4% hit that was coming in April… paying early end and my now sim only rate was cheaper than seeing the contract through.

Doing sim only with smarty now, £4 a month and they don’t hit you with this April increase bollocks.
    Will never touch contracts again.

  8. I can currently get internet and mobile for under 30 quid a month. I know this sub loves to hate on the big companies but that’s 3 hours at minimum wage how much cheaper can it really be?

  9. I just use PAYG Giffgaff £6 a month for 2gb data and unlimited calls/texts

No increase for those packages… they actually just doubled the data recently

  10. I got fed up with o2, i was paying £30 for like 20gb of data, swapped to voxi when they tried to up my price and get 30 gb with socials and video included, its an absoulte joke. Got my mum off o2 as well
