  1. 160 TDs

I don’t know how many senators (other than too many)

    Boat loads of councillors

Hardly surprising that some of them take drugs. Some of them pretty open about previous drug use.

  2. Of course they take drugs, they’re human

Some of them also drive in cycle lanes, torrent TV shows and movies and whatever else

  3. Yup every walk of life in society does, it’s one of the main reasons people shouldn’t be criminalized for it, it’s a social norm and should be treated as one.

  4. …Is this meant to be shocking or newsworthy?

Maybe if it was the 1970s, sure. But, “Some people out of a large group of adults are habitual drug users” is a given whether that group is politicians, teachers, engineers or clergy.

How odd that the Indo would put this as the headline.

  5. I’d be absolutely *astounded* if they didn’t. And I’m not even just talking recreational here – politicians taking prescription stimulants sourced illicitly seems absolutely inevitable to deal with the stress of the job.

  6. He’s not wrong. I joined a local TD on a 3 day bender a few years ago. Is anyone surprised here? That’s the real question

  7. Haven’t people said they’ve seen Leo in nightclubs in Dublin with the jaw hanging off him? I wouldn’t be surprised if nearly every TD hadn’t done drugs at some point in their lives and I’d say any under the age of 50 would have a high chance of being on the bag on a night out

  8. It’s like in the Middle East where being gay is illegal, they sure do enjoy bumming the shit out of each other but it is widely denied.

The open secret of society is that everyone and their ma does drugs. Why pretend otherwise? Legislate, tax and treat as a healthcare problem.
