Seems this proposal isn’t dead.

I don’t understand the logic behind it. In the pre-Netflix era the sector didn’t get any additional funding. How is the presence of Netflix (and other streaming services) causing them to lose out?

Plus, the recent swade of Irish nominations at this year’s Oscars would suggest that this county is producing content people will engage with.

If they really wanted to further the Irish entertainment industry, why not mandate that streaming services would be required to feature/host X number of hours of Irish-produced content?

  1. Sounds like a you problem, if you feel you can’t make anything interesting enough with all the talent we have (writers, actors, etc) then there’s almost no hope.

  2. Those people have money, give it to us, why? Because we want it.

Well miss out on all this money other people have unless someone takes it from them and gives it to us.

  3. Try making stuff people wanna watch? Give funding outside the inner circles.
I don’t work in tv and film but do in music and the shite ya see on funding schemes. Very hard for certain people to get a break with it retained inside certain groups and naturally creativity hops on planes elsewhere

  4. Most Irish-set films that are successful are actually British productions. Not Irish producers fault, it’s just where the talent and money goes.

  5. Im not even joking, if they put this forward I will brick RTE’s windows and glass doors. Get the fuck outta here with this shit.

Because they’ll just refuse and pull out. We’re not a major concern for them even if Ireland and NI are really attractive places to set up an actual production. They’ve little interest in things for Irish audiences and I doubt the people commissioning and distributing these shows even watch TV. Why make Irish programming when you really want to fund Vikings and Blade Runner and the like?

  7. Not a day after the RTÉ presenter salaries were released!! Hahahhahahahha

    Fucking morons!!
    Adapt or die your dickheads.
