Tomato shortage in UK supermarkets as bad weather hits crops in Europe and Africa

  1. Maybe more people should buy seasonal locally produced vegetables instead of imported. It may help the environment a bit and reduce some of that bad weather, though I suspect we are way past the point of no return there.

  2. Cucumbers, peppers and a few other things as well. Im disabled and have to get shopping delivered and last couple of weeks there has not been a single option for those three things. Even the organic/expensive stuff.
And a lot of other items only have the brand name product available.
When you normally pay 60p for an item and the only option £1.60 it’s not doable on PIP payments.
It is worrying enough the amount of people having to use food banks because they have no money at all, it’s very worrying that soon they might not even have food to give out.

  3. Wasn’t a shortage of tomato’s in France at the weekend. Was absolutely rammed with produce everywhere? How come we’re out and they aren’t?

  4. Another Brexit benefit, this will keep happening until we Rejoin the EU, Spain is part of EU they will prioritise EU countries supply chain before third countries like the UK.

    UK can have leftovers.

  5. Same in my own City (North East UK) our local-ish fruit merchants have plenty of tomatoes displayed outside. I think the fruit & veg shops, of which there are 3 within 100yds of each other, are owned by Indians, have pretty much everything & plenty of it. Next time I’m in the area I’ll check them out!

  6. What isn’t in short supply at the moment? My weekly trip to my local Sainsbury’s is like travelling through space and time to the Weimar Republic. Empty shelves and sky-high prices which just keep rising every week. Never mind, I’m sure those Brexit opportunities are just around the corner!

  7. I now fancy an egg mayo and tomato sandwich, because of budget restrictions I suppose I will have to settle for steak instead.

  8. Tons of tomatoes from all over here in Eastern Czech Rep. We are close to the last stop in the pan European supermarket supply line and there are no shortages of anything, just some high prices.

    Don’t believe the lies.

  9. Typical “shortage”. They’ll be unavailable for a bit then come back at double the price which becomes the new normal.

  10. I noticed last week no tomatoes and now a real lack of fresh produce hardly no meat . Here eggs flour and sugar have been hard to get as is bleach and washing up liquid and tea bags. Friends in the same county as me Essex are not having shortages in larger places like south end or Chelmsford.
Most commercial tomato growers, grow indoors so weather isn’t a factor in the shortage

  11. Here in East Yorkshire we had a massive greenhouse market garden growers but all gone now and this is part of the problem.

  13. Blows my mind his brexit supporters are happy to bend over and accept anything. Yeah we’re all going to survive, but life’s been pretty crap since we left the EU. No one can deny that.
