This is only going to become more common as climate change gets worse, which it will do due to continuing inaction from governments worldwide. People who complain about climate change protesters might want to acknowledge that next time they complain about a blocked road.
This will make the idiots empty the shelves in other places.
It’s the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine…)
The new normal? It’s been shortages of one thing and another for the last 3 years, global supply chains? Global Heating? War in Ukraine. I’ve been around for a long long time*, and things just don’t seem right any more.
*but my name isn’t Lucifer
My local Tesco had basically none of those things yesterday evening anyway, so I’d imagine they will be next.
At this point I think we’re a drought away from rationing.
Should we stop kneecapping domestic farmers in the face of food shortages? nah. We live in a buy on demand economy of course!
Why don’t other countries in Europe have to do this???
Welcome to the world of Climate Change. People better get use to it, as this is just the beginning.
Went to Sainsburys this morning to get my usual salad items for my lunches…4 cucumbers, 3 peppers, pack of tomatoes, pack of mushrooms and some beetroot (to which I add frozen sprouts and peas chicken and occasionally a few other bits).
That lot will last me 5 days, when I’ll repeat the same ritual.
at 9am, big Sainsbury’s had 3 cucumbers, no peppers, no tomatoes, not even any mushrooms! Looked like a bomb had gone off in there.
I’m sure I’m not alone in using cucumbers/peppers etc as the bulk of their salads/lunches, and the trouble is, what can you substitute in their place? there aren’t many alternatives.
If everywhere has to start limiting the amounts you can buy, people are just going to go nuts, and it’ll probably lead to more food waste 🤦♂️
Also means more frequent supermarket trips for everyone.
Fun times ahead!
Is this a regional issue? Local Aldi, Lidl and Tesco was fully stocked yesterday.
To be replaced by bugs in the near future. Have fun
No such problem in Lidl.
There’s just nothing to ration!
We buy most of our fruit and veg from the EU and most of our chicken. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that we voted to mess it all up. And that’s what we’ve got. Certain things have a short shelf life so any hold up in customs means less product getting through and more wastage as it inevitably goes off whilst waiting for customs
I didn’t even think of the consequences to logistics and couriering until I spoke to someone that works in it a couple of months before Brexit happened.
That doesn’t even go into the nightmare of buying something as a customer from the EU and vice versa them buying from the UK
And I lost my right to live in 26 other countries most of them with a better climate than the UK…
All because some of my country people thought there’s a migrant crisis, And the EU were ruining the country. All they’ve done is show our government is good enough at doing that on it’s own and doesn’t need help to ruin everything….
Here in Germany Peppers are up from €0.69 – €2.50 a pack, cucumbers €0.55 – €1.70, tomatoes €0.79 – €2.29. I guess this slowed down demand enough to maintain stock on the shelf in line with availability
BRRRRRREXIT BRRRRRRITAIN (i hope you rolled the Rs when you read this) tally hoooooo
Maybe its just me but buying frozen cauliflowers from Tesco (in store or online) has been a real challenge.
End of the world, climate change, new normal, marginal market….and yet no such thing in sight in any other country on the continent I’ve been in to in the past 1-2 months and its been a few.
Wonder why that is…smth, smth, Brexit
I wonder if I can get some sort of exemption, like a signed letter from my vet which just says: I have guinea pigs.
Add in feta cheese & olives and the Greek diaspora here will be mighty pissed off.
Can we all (those who are able too) just start a *true* co-op?
Just imagine; You grow some cucumbers, your neighbour John grows some lettuce, Carol does the carrots, Steve’s got the eggs from his hens, you all meet up and do a bit of a swap?
Perfectly normal country, with a perfectly normal supply shortage. Nothing to do with Brexit. Move along
Got nothing to do with Brexit and has nothing to do with the environment it’s the same reason why there’s an egg shortage the supermarkets are not paying the farmers who are growing the vegetables and other produce enough, the prices of producing the produce has gone up but the supermarkets are not paying to offset the rising costs go to your local greengrocer / butchers if you still want these produce
I ordered three red peppers in my shop this week and got 1 yellow pepper. Thought that was a bit weird.
Based on the typical shopper in my local Asda, it won’t be noticed… if there was a shortage of monster or rustlers, then that would mean riots.
Frankly I was amazed that Brexit isn’t behind this
Doesn’t explain however why ASDA has dropped a whole raft of product lines, like whiskas tinned cat food, in favour of their own brands, which have suddenly gone up in price…
I detect the whiff of bullshittery to hide profiteering
Left the UK 9 months ago. I miss my family and friends dearly but I still think I made the right decision.
Good job I don’t eat these items anyway.
15 years from now people will be out killing and eating pigeons because there is nothing else
Must admit, for all the talk of shortages, I hadn’t actually experienced any until I went food shopping yesterday and there were just two packs of the cheapest salad tomatoes left. I assumed it was a one-off.
There weren’t many peppers now I think about it.
In the UK we are really spoilt for choice of foods in supermarkets. I went into my local Tesco last year and counted over 20 different types of tomatoes I could buy. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that in another country – Europe or otherwise. Our supermarkets are absolutely huge. Whether it’s Brexit or climate change, I think we will have to get used to not having dozens of types of the same product available. It leads to huge amounts of waste and it’s not sustainable.
But I was told the power of BREXIT had the ability to grow tomatos and cucumbers out of thin air? Called TaKiNg BaCk CoNtRoL?!
